Well, they make for really well mounted frame sliders!

I tried a new method last night to install some frame sliders. I used a laser pointer to line everything up.

Basically, you put the laser pointer on a stand so that you can line it up with the bolt holes exactly. On the F4i at least, the place where you mount the frame sliders is hollow if you take both bolts out. When they are both out, you know you are lined up because the laser will shine right though the bike.

Once you have the laser all lined up, put the fairing on. You'll have a nice, bright dot right where you should drill. Take the fairing off and repeat on the other side.

I did this and drilled my 2" frame slider holes with a 2" hole saw. They both friction fit into the fairing with no gap around the silder at all.

Damn that fit is tight as hell!!! Care to explain a bit more about how you aimed the laser pointer? Did you just lay it down on a stand or did you have a holder? That is probably the best slider install I've seen...

The easiest way to aim the laser pointer would be with a small camera tripod. I didn't have anything low enough, so I just used a normal hydraulic jack with a 2X4 on top of it to get the height in the right range. I just set the pointer on the "stand."

The challenge is to get a height adjustabe surface that is paralell with the bike. In my case, I had bike stands, so I just needed paralell with the ground. So I figured that I could use a hydraulic jack to adjust the height, and I could just rotate the pointer to get it lined up right. If  you don't have a stand, you'll need a way to get the bike vertical or get a setup that lets you angle the pointer.

What you are trying to do is get the laser pointed exactly though the center of the bolt hole. The F4i is hollow through this spot if you have the bolts taken out of both sides. So if you get the laser lined up so that it shines right through the bike and onto the wall behind it, you can be sure that you are pretty close to lined up. If you're off at all, the laser will run into the wall of the bolt hole and won't shine through.

Of course you want the laser pointer a few feet away from the bike so that you can put the fairings on and off without bumping the laser. Since the laser dot doesn't really diverge at all, it doesn't matter how far away it is. It could literally be on the other side of the garage.

To get even better alignment, you can put the stock bolt back in the hole. The bolt has a curved interior, and it makes it really obvious when you are dead center, since the light gets really bright when you hit the center. However, this won't tell you if the angle through the hole is correct, so you have to make sure it shines though as well as being in the center of the hole.

It sounds kind of complex, but I had both my holes aligned, marked, and drilled in less than 15 minutes.

Wow, that install is nothing short of perfect... wish somebody gave me this idea a few weeks ago, i bought new fiberglass fairings recently and taped foam to the back of them to get the location...

Well, I guess great minds think alike. I dodn't see the other thread either, but at least we now know it works.

And Kcult does get kudos for thinking of it first, even if he didn't actually do anything about it

Question:
Just to clarify, you used a 2" hole saw?  I read a bunch of the tutorials and they all say 2" hole saw.  Then, I found the intuitive instructions and they say 1 7/8" hole saw. 

Did you need a dremel or were the drilled hole pretty clean?

I really want a tight fit and soon as the parts and tool arrive via UPS am will be drilling.

Do you think a 1 7/8" would be too small?
