Surprise [:O] Does size really matter???

ok pervs...i'm talking engines here.  there's a lot of talk about why people buy the bikes they do for ex. 600, 750, 1000.  i've heard salesmen tell newbies that, "you better get the 750 because you're going to grow out of the 600 in 3 months" or, "you're a big dude, you need a 1000"

i was wondering what the dealerships told you ladies when you went to purchase your bikes.

and for the record, i've owned and raced a F4i and 600rr and i've yet to grow out of a 600

Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it!) I know all the salesmen around here so they won't be bullsh!tting me!  I think it's easier to feed a line of crap to a newbie guy especially if he walks in there with a bunch of his buddies who don't know anything either.  It's much like making any sort of big purchase, you need to do your homework and be an informed consumer!

I don't see myself growing out of my 600 ANY time soon!

    I agree with BabyBlade.  It's easy to bullsh*t a newbie.  Most people won't outgrow a 600 ... notice I said "most."

    Re: Does size really matter???

Look, I know plenty of guys that have had liter bikes and moved back DOWN to a 600 cc.  I've been to plenty of dealers through out my riding life, and I can tell you, not only do I get the "you buying this for your bf/husband" or "this can't be for you, you need to ride a crusier" shyt... If any of these spew out of a dealers mouth, I'm SO gone.  Dealers want you to buy bigger, for the fact that most bigger bikes mean bigger price tags.  I've gone from liters to 600's to 750's.    Like you I have yet to grow out of any 600.  The 600's now a days are almost just as quick as some of the liter bikes out there.  I have no problem keeping up with some of my guy friends on their liters with my old F3.  It's not the bike, it's the rider Big Smile

    Re: Does size really matter???

    I have a question:

do you notice that a lot of taller riders always ask if they should go with a liter because they are so tall?

aren't the bikes the same size? aren't some of the liters even more aggresive in that their legs will be even MORE cramped because of the angles?

    correct me if i'm wrong.....

    Re: Does size really matter???

I am 5 foot 10 165 pounds.I dont have any trouble riding a 600 to a 1000 .My last bike was a o4 cbr f4i it was fun but when i rode a passenger it just seemed to not cut it .The suspension sagged a bit ,the brakes definatly seemed like they needed an upgrade.Basically if you are tall or weigh 200 to 250 pounds I  would not suggest a 600cc bike. Most bikes are simiular in size but a larger cc bike is going to have beefier equipment.I hope this helps but realize this is my own opinion.

    Re: Does size really matter???

I don't think a 1000cc bike is better for passengers.  It doesn't necessarily have "beefier equipment."  The bikes don't really weigh much more than a 600cc bike by comparison.  If your suspension sags alot when you take a passenger, you've either got too big of a passenger, or you didn't adjust your suspension correctly for a passenger.  I don't think the idea that you're going to be taking passengers warrants getting a liter bike.  My F4i brakes like any bike would with an extra hundred or so pounds on the back.

    Re: Does size really matter???

I got a liter bike for 2 up riding. I figured I wouldn't have to dog the crap out of her with 2up riding as much, and the suspension is a bit better than a 600. I'm glad I made the decision I did. I think if you have a level head, you should be ok. I guess I just prefer to have the stability of a larger machine, I don't really need to floor it all the time like a 600 and cruising on the free way is easier on the machine, which ultimately means she might last longer. I really haated those freeway rides where a 600 kinda just screams along vibrating your hands etc, while a liter bike is quiter and just humming. Yah probably could have went with another 600 but for the money I think it was well spent. Now I would still like a 600 for the track.

No, you are right.  There is hardly a difference, if any,  in overall dimensions between a 600 and a 1000.  A 1000cc bike is not somehow going to fit a bigger person any better than a 600cc bike ;-)  That argument about being tall and therefore needing a 1000 is completely flawed and totally ridiculous!

    Re: Does size really matter???

Different bikes have different seat heights and distance to the bars. The GSXR 1000 is actually lower to the ground than the new R6 by almost 2 inches! Seat width also plays a factor.

    Re: Does size really matter???

I am 6'6" tall and i have the 07 600rr... and i fit on it amazingly well... it was one of the ONLY sportbikes that I fit on comfortably... but the 06s i could not fit on bc the gas tank was cut lower and my knees could not tuck in... the 1000s pegs were up higher to the body and made it really uncomfortable to sit on for me... not with a passenger it is harder to stop obviously due to the added weight but she has no prob stopping... the suspension handles quite well but you can tell that I am right at the edge of the weight limit with a passenger on it.... overall i am more than happy with the 600..

    Re: Does size really matter???

I'm 6'1" 190lbs.  I ride a 2000 929RR.  My first bike was a 98 600F3, my second was a 93 ZX-7R, and as I said my current is a 00 929RR.  All three of these bikes felt almost the same as far as size.  I probably would have bought another 600, but I stumbled onto this 929 with 5800 miles for $1700.  I couldn't pass it up.  I fell in love with it the first day I rode it.  A lot of my friends own different sizes of bikes, The only bikes I think most riders would ever grow out of is a Ninja 250 or 500.  I know at my riding level, there's no way I could ride a 600 to its full potential and i've been riding for 3 years.  I think the biggest factor on deciding on the size of your bike is what you're going to use it for, and if its a bigger bike, the size of your brain plays a part...lol.
