Neutral or pull-in-clutch at stop light?

I'm curious what's better for the bike....

I always just pull in the clutch because shifting from N to 1 sounds so nasty. Is there any reason to shift to neutral, other than being easier on the rider for not having to hold onto the shift lever?

I've seen some guys shift to N, and some stay in 1, so what's better?

Whichever is more comfortable for you will work. I'll stay in first at stopsigns but i'll put it in neutral at redlights.

BTW, why did you put this in the "riding gear" section?

MSF teaches you to always be in gear and ready to roll incase something happens...

Personaly i normaly just clutch it unless i know it's gona be a long light then i'll only go to N after i get 2-3 cars behind me so i know my tail less likely to be squished (notice i said less likely since it could still happen)

Neutral at lights and first at stop signs, and always on the lookout for the tarded cagers.

Re: Neutral or pull-in-clutch at stop light?

A friend of mine was stopped at a light once behind 2 cars. a car came up behind him at 60 mph and rear ended him forcing him into the car in front, and that car into the other, which pushed the front car into the middle of the intersection. Thankfully he was in a car and only suffered a herniated liver (he's all better after a month of taking it easy) his entire back end of the car was forced into the passanger compartment, and his seat came off it's hinges. The woman that hit him claims not to have seen them at the light. she was in a 4 door passanger car. That is why i'm always in gear watching my mirriors unless i've got 3 cars behind me at a light. I figure those 3 cars will take most of the damage and if i've got that many behind me theres normly not an easy out for me otherwise. Friendly reminder boys and girls. This could have turned out far worse even in the car but no doubt deadly on the bike since A. were harder to see and B. we don't have steel cages and air bags around us.

Re: Neutral or pull-in-clutch at stop light?

What are you going to do if they come from the front? When Ashley was young, she was involved in a wreck when they were sitting at a red light and some a$$hole coming towards them in the opposite direction decided to hit them head on. She was in the back of a van. She flew to the front, hit the windshield, then flew all the way back into the very back. When they found her, her leg was behind her head. She was in the hospital for weeks. She had to have all kinds of surgery done on her face and her knee basically had to be reconstructed. She has a scar that runs between her eyes, all the way up into her scalp that is shaped like this bracket } I think it's sexy though. There's not much you could do in a situation like that. I don't think you'd have time to react.

My training manual says if you stay in 1st gear with the clutch in at a light it's not good for the clutch, something about hot clutch?

Re: Neutral or pull-in-clutch at stop light?

that's the kind of answer I was looking for....

I want to know if it's bad for the bike or not, cuz I personally stay in gear for the same reasons... just in case.

I think I'm fine just staying in first, unless it's a long light and you don't have to worry so much about cagers.

Re: Neutral or pull-in-clutch at stop light?

I always just pull in the clutch and click the bike in Neutral and roll up to the light and keep an eye out for cars stopping behind me incase I have to gouge on it to get away from them.

Re: Neutral or pull-in-clutch at stop light?

I'm pretty sure all those wheelies I clutch up are a little worse on the clutches than sitting at a red light with it in gear.

Re: Neutral or pull-in-clutch at stop light?

When I come to a light, I pull in the clutch just in case I need to make a fast getaway (you never know when my groupies are going to get me :P ) I don't put it into neutral until I know the traffic around me has settled in and my chances of needing to take off are slim.
