1st bike - 1980 Honda XR 80
1st street bike - 1989 Suzuki GS 500E with a V&H SuperSport exhaust
I had ridden dirt bikes as a kid, so when I got my GS 500 I was already familiar with where the basic controls were (throttle, brakes, clutch, shift lever). So in that aspect I was pretty comfortable, although I soon learned that riding a dirtbike and riding a street bike are two different things.
As "math" has said, that bike was very forgiving................ the bike saved my "I think I'm a SuperBike star" a** more than once. lol The Ninja 500R is also forgiving but with much more power than the GS 500 has.
Since it was my first street bike and my street riding skill level was so low, the bike was PLENTY fast enough for me. I KNOW for a fact, that the smile on my face when I wacked the throttle open on that 500 cc bike was just the same as any of the people on this website that have a 600, 929 , 954, or 1000.
It wasn't until I had been riding the 500 for a while, my experience grew, and I rode my friends bigger bikes without cra**ing my pants (ie. I felt comfortable riding them and not intimidated by the bike) that I thought it was time to move up.
I bought the GS500 in the beginning of 92, and rode it until 93. I lived in AZ at the time and riding weather was year round, so I got a good solid year of riding experience on the GS 500.
In 93 I bought a new GSX-R 750 and rode that until I sold it in 95 when I moved overseas. I got that bike because all my friends had fast supersport bikes and I didn't always want to be on the "slowest, smallest, uncoolest" bike in the group.
I have no problem admitting that going from the GS500 right into a Gixxer 750 was a BAD MOVE (for me at least). The 750 was NOT AT ALL forgiving like the 500 was, and quite frankly I had sooo much more fun on the 500 which was closer to my skill level. I did however get more riding experience on the 750, so that was good. After I sold the 750 in 95, I have not been on a bike since then until now.
I just recently bought a 93 CBR 600F2 which is a much better "step up" from the 500.
Sorry for the novel.
