Re: upshifting without clutch...
when your cruising along, just release the throttle and at the same moment you can upshift or downshift without the clutch.
cuts down on wrist fatigue. You can accelerate, turn, brake and shift with only one hand (carefully)
Very handy for drag racing too. Get to redline WOT, cut the throttle just for an instant to shift. Yes even from 1st to 2nd if your firm with your shift. ![Wink [;)]](/emoticons/emotion-5.gif)

Re: upshifting without clutch...
I've read alot of articles in the mags about this very thing
and the impression I got was that if done properly no tranny damage will occur. The key seems to be smoothness cause when you do it wrong you'll know immediately. It feels kinda
like when you first start driving a stick shift, let the clutch out too fast and get that herky jerky motion. I've found, on my bike at least, that it's very smooth when upshifting but I have to be in the correct rpm range to downshift clutchless. So I only upshift clutchless when I'm WOT, but I use the clutch for all downshifting. That'll be two cents please:)
While walking down the street the other day, this lady comes up to me and says in a real snobbish voice " Did you know a cow was murdered for you to have that jacket? " I looked down at my leather, slowly panned back up to her face and in the craziest voice I could muster said " I didn't realize there were any witnesses...now I'll have to kill you too. "

Re: upshifting without clutch...
educate thy self
once you understand how the tranny works then make your own decision about what will cause damage.

Re: upshifting without clutch...
so do most people shift clutchless or is it just personal preference?

Re: upshifting without clutch...
Unless I am flogging it, I do the 1-2 with the clutch, then the rest without. It just seems smoother that way. I figure I am probably saving some clutch life too.

Re: upshifting without clutch...
I haven't tried shifting clutchless, but it does seem that when I'm in the upper ranges of RPM it will shift a lot more smoothly.

True you are saving clutch life, but at what expense? I would rather wear out a clutch then more critical parts in the trans. I can see how there might be some benefit if the shifts are smoother, but on a bike you can shift so fast as it is, it hardly seems worth the risk to me.... but thats just my opinion, to each his own.

Re: upshifting without clutch...
I can't imagine how much extra damage I could be doing. When I upshift without the clutch I am backing off the throttle. Essentially the same as what happens with a Power Commander Shifter, just a whole lot slower than the PC.

Re: upshifting without clutch...
If you aren't getting a clunk or grind when upshifting without using
the clutch then you are fine. If you were doing it wrong and
mangling the tranny while doing it you would feel and hear it.
Upshifting without the clutch can be even smoother than with. I
find I get less drivetrain lash effect at the rear tire when I go
clutchless.

Re: upshifting without clutch...
This blows my mind & goes against everything that I've ever believed.
Question: so you jimmy up a little towards the next gear, back off the throttle a bit quickly, back on the throttle quickly and it automatically goes into the next gear for you?
Or jimmy up, back off, kick it up, back on the throttle?
And how do you know if you've jimmy'd up far enough? (no offense to Jimmy).
I don't know if I can bring myself to try this, but then again you only live once.
Thanks.

Re: upshifting without clutch...
not necessarily automatically... think of it this way, you preload the shifter by giving it pressure.....when you are ready to shift, you sort of blip the throttle a bit, let off...and at that same time, you apply the rest of the needed pressure to the shifter and it will slide right up, then you immediately get back on the throttle....if done correctly, it is incredibly smooth... i am like the other poster, i clutch shift 1 to 2 and clutchless the rest of the way...unless i am low in the RPMs...it's harder to do if you are under 5k (i know you shouldn't be...haha).... so in summary.... 1) on gas above 5k 2) put pressure on the shifter, i.e., start pressing it up until you feel resistance 3) get on the throttle real quick 4) let off the throttle and at same time finish the shift with your foot 5) get back on the gas 6) enjoy your new skill!!!
