    Braking with 2 fingers

Ive heard before it is desireable to brake with 2 fingers rather then grabing a whole fist full of brake handle.  I broke my hand about a month ago and couldnt ride cause it was entirely too painful.  I had three 2" pins inserted in my hand.  Anywho, the pins are out now, and I rode last night.for the first time in a while, and I 2 fingered it because my ring finger is still not fully operational.  Im wondering if I should continue this technique, as I heard with the 2 finger technique it is far harder to grab a hand full of brake to do something way uncontrolled.

    Re: Braking with 2 fingers

Its all personal preference.  I use two fingers because I then use my other fingers to blip the throttle as I'm downshifting.

But what do I know......Rossi uses 4 fingers.  Stick out tongue [:P]

    Re: Braking with 2 fingers

i use 2 most of the time.

Rossi uses 1-4 depending on how hard he has to brake.  I think i saw an interview about that.

    Re: Braking with 2 fingers

I personally use two fingers on the brake. This helps to prevent grabbing to much front brake. It's all personal preference though. I use all 4 fingers on the clutch because it helps me control it better but I know many a rider who uses only 1 finger on the clutch. Just do whatever makes you feel comfortable

    Re: Braking with 2 fingers

When I am just cruising or riding the twisties I use one finger on the clutch and one on the brake.

If I am approaching a intersection I place two fingers over the brake and use all four on the clutch.

It's just more comfortable for me to cover the brake and clutch with one finger each. If I get into any situation that I may need to brake quickly (heavy traffic, residential streets, etc.) I will increase the number of fingers accordingly.

But I am FAR from an experienced rider.

4 fingers on the clutch, 2 on the brake---just more comfy.  though the MSF bashed me for only using 2--had to use 4 there to pass.

    Re: Braking with 2 fingers

I'm a 2 and 2 person myself.  I use 4 on the clutch whenever that lever is moving (shifting, coasting, whatever), but it's more comfy to keep 2 sitting on it.  Lets me keep a better hold of the handlebar too.

    Re: Braking with 2 fingers

I've been told by a few people to always use 4.  One of whome learned this from a guy who lost his fingers when he crashed with two fingers on the brake and the lever sliced em off.  I like my fingers so I try to remember to use all 4 when I can.

    Re: Braking with 2 fingers

I would have to agree with cbrf23. One of my good friencds had his fingers sliced off by the brake leaver.

Still, I guess it's personal preference. I use 4 and 4 as I find blipping the throttle on down-shifts easier with 4 fingers on the brake as I just roll my wrist to blip.

    Re: Braking with 2 fingers

At the advanced rider's MSF course they told me the same thing to use 4 fingers at all times when braking and to always combine front/rear brake blah blah blah. Well at the end of the course we all had to go through a series of individual tests to pass, S turns, swerving left or right, and...a panic stop from 35 mph. At the end of the course the instructor (who rides a superglide or something) gaves us our "grades" and pointed out any techniques we should work on. On the braking test he went through all the riders in teh course (10 other guys all on various HD cruisers) and said "from your speed  you should have stopped in 20 feet and you stopped in 15, good job" etc etc. He neglected to tell me how I did...when I asked he kinda laughed and said, "O.K. you should have stopped in 15 feet and you stopped in....let's see....FOUR" I was like, "so that kinda blows your four finger rule outta the water, eh?" He was like you won't always be riding that kinda bike where you can stop like that...but good job.

    Re: Braking with 2 fingers

That was just a suggested speed, we had to accelerate and shift into 2nd then stop upon reaching 2 cones. I would say I was going 30-35 sure and the rear tire lifted off the ground a little too.

So he musta lost his fingers while braking right?   Unless he always rides with his fingers on lever.
