    back off...get your own bike!

i've been searching the internet and i have seen many different ways of protecting your bike from disc locks to chains and even alarms. just wondering if anyone has any experience with some of these products and any recommendations. maybe even put a gps chip on it..prob easier said than done. any help would be great

Re: back off...get your own bike!

i like my disc lock.  convenient, as i can either store it in the toolkit box or in my backpack.  it also stops asshats from breaking the igntion/steering lock and simply riding away w/ your bike.  obviously it wont prevent a couple of big guys from simply picking my bike up into the back of a truck, so i try to park in places that are not accessible to trucks.

Re: back off...get your own bike!

haha, what parking place isn't generally accessible to trucks?

disc locks are worthless, they'll break the ignition with or without you having a disc lock.  basically bike locks are stupid, the best thing you could get would be a security system so the bike makes loud noises and goes off flashing when somebody tampers with it. or just get nothing

Another alternative is to chain it down like you mentioned but again there's not a whole lot of parking places that offer something strong to chain it down too.

A real bike thief is gonna have a truck or van and whether you got a disc lock or not they're gonna laod it

plenty of parking lots around here, esp at my university which is where the bike is parked most often, that have motorcycle specific parking.  most of which are fenced off by steel poles stuck in the ground, preventing anything bigger than a golfkart from making it through.

there r two types of thieves that steal motorcycles.  type1 are the POS that punch your ignition or twist the bars w/ their legs to break the lock... and simply ride away on your bike.  its fast, ez, and u prob wont get caught doing it.  obviously, these f***ers will be thwarted by a disc lock even if they do punch your ignition.  so theres no need to call something stupid because u dont think it does any good.  type2 thieves are the ones that wont care if uve got a chain, cable, alarm, GPS, or disc lock.... by the time anyone notices, the bike will be hiding away somewhere w/ the wiring harness cut and half the parts already off it.  if i can stop even half the type1 thieves from looking at my bike, maybe get them to go for the one w/out a disc lock parked right next to it... then im happy.

Re: back off...get your own bike!

disk locks are a pieces of s-h-i-e-t!!!  how do i know... i put my xeno lock on the rear brake rotor one time... didn't put that little orange cable/reminder thingie... i backed it up standing up to pull out of the parking space and didn't realize it. of course, the bike didn't move past a certain distance and i remembered the disk lock.

whoa and behold, the pin was bent with little effort and i wiggled it out. i sent pictures out to xeno claiming it's very faulty and was just asking for a replacement. they said i'm just grateful the bike didn't get stolen, so that alone was worth the disk lock. no one was trying to steal my bike, you stupid a-s-s- xeno company!!!!!  Angry

will never buy anything of their products and i'll always post this info when i come across disk locks. Stick out tongue

    never trust disk locks

yeah there is a need for that haha, they don't do any good, sorry man....pretty much a waste of time and effort in my book, i'm glad somebody agrees with me on this as well.  Disc locks are ALMOST worthless.

as for the noises and flashing lights, they make alarms for motorcycles that are similar to auto alarms, just do a search at google or something and you should find some results.

Re: back off...get your own bike!

IMHO, disk locks and alarms are only good for temporary, non-permanent parking (e.g. going to the mall or something like that).  They won't be good for permanent parking (e.g. in front of your house).  That's because the hard core bike thieves will scope out their target and know what security measures need to be overcome.  Then they'll just put the bike in the back of a truck or van and be gone in less than 30 seconds.

Re: back off...get your own bike!

You're missing the point of what everyone is saying.... THERE IS NO PERMANENT SOLUTION!  If they want your bike, they'll get it.  Just get full coverage insurance and don't think it any more.

Re: back off...get your own bike!

Welcome to the real world, but I agree- it does suck.  It's the same thing as a car- they want it, they'll get it.

Alarm- Who listens to them any more?  They bother people because they make noise usually when there is nobody around.

Disc Lock- Yeah, it was the locks fault you didn't take it off and it got bent.  Granted, it shouldn't have bent that easy.

Chain/Cable- Maybe there is something to hook it to, but if the thief is halfway decent he'll have a good hammer or cutters of some sort.

You could always leave it at home though, but wait- I have had 2 friends who's bikes were taken out of their garages.

Personally, that's what I did.  I keep full coverage and don't worry too much.  I do use a cable & lock.  Keeps the honest people honest.  A real theif will steal it and have it chopped up before you know it's missing.

exactly and only my point. i'm not saying it's not my fault for forgetting it, but that it was a huge realization it was that easy to bend the pin. wasn't much force pushing the bike to get that thing out.

if you can't afford full coverage, at least have comprehensive to cover it if it's stolen. you'll just be SOL if it's your fault cuz you have to fix that yourself though. and there is some grey area (sometimes) if it can be covered under comprehensive, i.e. a big chunk of wood fell off the truck ahead of you, hit your front tire and you crashed. (this is how my car repair on hood fell under, and of course, i couldn't raelly catch the license plate of the person in front who threw a big piece up in teh air that rolled on my hood at speed).

Re: back off...get your own bike!

Everyone is right. If a thief is determined they will get it. The best thing is to make it harder than the bike next to it. I guess the best defense is an offense. I purchased a Gorilla two-way paging system Part#7017, check it out  It was approx. $150.00 from the local honda dealer.  If you go to the extreme and have the alarm, lock & insurance you should be able to sleep at night. Good luck.

At the honda dealer where I get my bike serviced, they install Lo Jack for Motorcycles. While not a deterrent, you may be able to get an insurance discount for having it, and if it gets stolen, lo Jack can track it down.
