Frustrated...bike is leaking mixture of oil/gas from exhaust where slip-on meets
ok...the short of it is this.....its an 02 F4i, with M4 pipe and PC3, bought it new, it has 4200 miles on it, I barely ride it, it has sat and sat and sat, meanwhile, I have always maintained it with oil changes. last time I rode, I had to jump the battery and it has sat for the last two months until today I got a new battery and was all excited about going riding tonight only to find out its leaking gas
let me rephrase, it started, sputtered to stay alive, gas started coming out of lower exhaust piece where the slip on meets, then it died, i can start it by throttling it, it will start but the more gas you give, the more comes out.
What the friggin hell is going on with it, I read alot of stuff about it was running too rich (which it was, I smelled like exhaust after riding, most say that was normal) and it might be a fuel injector stuck open, I doubt the injector is stuck, I have not checked the spark plugs at this point. maybe in need of a good tune up?? maybe bad nasty old gas, seafoam treatment and fresh gas?? what do u guys think?? thanks in advance

Do the seafom and a tank of high test for sure. Drain the old out first, some people just mix it in and hope for the best but you need to start fresh. get a spray bottle full of water. Start the bike and let it run for a minute or so. Then spray each headertube one at a time! The water should dance right off and never get a chance to spread out. If one of them lets the water soak and spread then that plug isnt firing!! This will save you from changing plugs if that isnt part of the problem. plus you dont need to rip the bike apart to do this quick test.

Re: Frustrated...bike is leaking mixture of oil/gas from exhaust where slip-on meets
hubbard...thank you for the help! I got the bike started and took it for a ride down the street in my neighborhood, I didn't have a water bottle on hand but i did have my own 'hands' and sure enough, 2 of the inner cylinders are not firing, the two on the ends are firing hotter than hell hehehe
so im going to go ahead and do my own tune up, spark plugs and oil/oil filter, anything else i should check when i dig in? I'm going to go with the Denso's, they are .035" out of the box, the NGK's are about 30 cents more but the gap on them is .036", honda manual calls for .035

Make sure that these two cylinders are actually being fired. Replacing plugs will not help anything if your disctribution box is not sending any elctricity to them

Fulcrum is right, unfortunatly putting the new plugs in and putting the bike back together may be the only way to find out. If I had to bet though I would go for the plugs since there made to fail sooner or later. Glad my little trick worked for you!! good luck!

yea thats exactly it, i wont know until i get the new plugs anyways, so i ordered them last night, they should be here tomorrow, im pretty sure everything is okay, since i've had the bike its been great! but these are the original plugs that came with the bike when i bought it, 6 year old plugs are destined to fail at some point

Re: Frustrated...bike is leaking mixture of oil/gas from exhaust where slip-on meets
Well, this really sucks a big one! I changed the spark plugs over today, the originals were NGK's and they were looking nasty, they were replaced with Denso's, (which the spark plug change, what a pain), replaced everything, got my air flow sensor plugged back in, cooling fan sensor plug back in, I take it to the street to start the bike...............I got my fingers crossed!
Same thing..........its leaking fuel down around the exhaust where the slip on meets, so what now!?
the ECM? how the hek does something like that become faulty, and is there any way to test it before i go buying one off of ebay AND are there two different ECM's for a Cali model and 49 state legal, because mine is the 49 state legal bike
Anybody got an F4i and live in Riverside, CA I am in the Hemet/San Jacinto area, maybe we could swap out a known good box with mine and see what happens.....

Yes different ecu's. If you need the service manual let me know i can send it to you pdf. It's weird that you have gas leak. If you can take a picture and post it? Fuel injectors rearly do get stuck open because of bad gas.....seafoam wont help no matter what any one says..... Try to take the fuel injectors our and send them to get clean. The only place that i know that cleans fuel injectors is napa, you can ask your napa if they can clean them. ............ Good luck

Re: Frustrated...bike is leaking mixture of oil/gas from exhaust where slip-on meets
Now its time to get serious. first make sure that the gas is indeed coming from the inside of the exhaust pipe, and not dripping down from some where else. If it is indeed coming through the exhaust then start back tracking . Do the spray bottle thing again to see if all plugs are lighting off their fuel. If you find a suspect cylinder unplug the pig tail from the injector ( bike will probably be missing anyway on that plug) and see if if stops. I dont think that the ecm would do this, the ecm fires the relays on the injectors in pulses . it verys the time between and the time during these pulses for different engine conditions. It would have to leave the relays on full time to puddle like that. but a relay could be stuck on an injector so it stays open regardless of what the ecm tells it to do.
This will get you started, keep this post going so we know whats going on.

Man, awsome pics! Ok, something comes to mind. how many coils? and to what cylinders? I dont know , but .....2 coils?..........1 for the two outer plugs and 1 for the two inner? Im betting on an ignition problem though......I would back track from the plugs all the way back as far as possible and make sure every component is working properly. I realy think you have an ignition problem!!!!!

It's coil over plug, so there is 4 coils for each plug. Have you checked to see if you have spark in the inned cyclinders>? Remove coils and place a plug on a coil...Ground the plug and crank the bike and see if you get spark.

Re: Frustrated...bike is leaking mixture of oil/gas from exhaust where slip-on meets
ok, yeah ground the plugs and see if they spark. It's a little weird that it is the same problem on the same cylinders with new plugs, but not out of the question for them to be bad. and that would be great!.......But where does the coils get there signal to fire from? you may well have to trace this back a step or two further......

i'm not a mechanic. i've never pulled a motor apart. but the fact that you've got the two middle cylinders fouling plugs makes me think you ought to read this: http://cbrworld.net/forums/thread/289089.aspxapologies if i'm way off base and caused you to waste your time.

Re: Frustrated...bike is leaking mixture of oil/gas from exhaust where slip-on meets
Hmmm, I do find the fuel driping a bit troubling........ also worth checking since that much fuel would "drowned" the cylinders, preventing them from firing!?!
