    A/F ratio metering

I posted this on cbrforum with no response.  How do the dyno shops meter A/F ratio on bikes without O2 sensors?  I've been looking into the DIY A/F meters but they all require use of O2 sensors which older bikes dont have.

    Re: A/F ratio metering

More than likley with a sensor that is stuck into the exhaust system. You can purchase an A/F meter with an oxengen sensor from companys like K&N or auto AUTO METER with an exhaust "bung" that welds on to the pipe for the sensor to screw into . Their fairly simple 2 wire hook ups for the most part, from what i remember the sensor cost a couple dollars more then the guage .but it's roughly double the price of the guage alone.

Our exhaust systems are usualy made of  titanium, stainless steel, and aluminum. I dont know if steel (the bung) can be welded to titanium or not, but it can be welded to stainless, and CAN NOT be welded to aluminum. The best method of welding is T.I.G.welding, and the imeadiate welded area and bung will need to be treated with an extreme temp. paint  since it will be prone to rust. MIG welding is possible but the result wont be nearly as neat  or clean looking . Carefull searching may find an exhaust shop with a S.S. bung This would be better.

For thin metals like what is on motor cycle exhaust, you would be a fool to MIG it, if TIG is avalible. TIG is much better suited, as you have better control of your heat and filler than a mig could ever  hope for. Not to mention there is almost no splater to speak of . The fit and finish of a good TIG weld is second to none.  MIG is better suited to thicker materials were speed is desired more over finish.

It's a complex decision based on thickness , heat, and finish quality, and speed of the process. But in no way would I ever pick MIG over TIG for this kind of work. It would be like filling a thimble with a garden hose................It's just not the right tool.

Wow, way to bastardize a thread.

BTW, Casey Stoner and kangaroos are Australian, not Austrian.

yeeeeeeah, that's kind of where the joke comes from, but uuuh, yeah. Explaining it really kills the punch.
