    what cops drive

i watch the american cops (the tv show) and the cars they seem to drive look to be a little weak!

now theyre not models of cars we get here in Austalia so could anyone fill me in on wheather those chase cars are up to standard.

over here highway patrol have 6L V8s, 5.8L V8s, 4L turbos and ocasionally high performance Jap imports.

in addition... isn't it that PD/sheriff's/etc. *have* to buy american cars? I read that the u.s. manufacturers give a heavy discount towards local PD. It thought it's part reasoning of buying American also. I don't think I've ever seen a non-U.S. made police car.

    Re: what cops drive

It's the same reason bike cops don't ride honda's they ride harley's......

It's an american thing i would say.  And i'm sure the manufacturers are giving them incentive to stay with the american made car......i.e. discount.

    Re: what cops drive

The only non-American police cars I have ever seen have been vehicles that were confiscated by police.  But they've always been cars for publicity, not for patrol.  But, around here (New Jersey) I have seen police riding in souped up Chargers and Mustangs.

    Re: what cops drive

The biggest issue with import cars as cruisers is that FWD is a horrible transmission for the abuse a cop puts to it and the imports that are RWD are going to be too expensive.

And yes, manufacturers/dealers do give a discount to departments and cities that drive their vehicles.

In response to the original post-

Most police cars are now either Chargers or Crown Victorias (phasing out since Ford is talking about discontinuing them).  Some departments will drive Dodge or Ford trucks and some Chevy Tahoes.

I think POs should start doing their part to help save the environment.  Let them all start driving Priuses (Prii?), or whatever the plural for Prius is.  Wink

    Re: what cops drive

Moto Popo in San Diego ride BMW's.....  i also seen the Camaro highway patrol cars in CA actually on patrol, so they cant be all weaksauce...

however, the HD thing is a bit of a tradition id guess.  my uncle (whom owns tons of bikes) has a decommisioned Popo Harley and that thing is his daily driver.  sure they remove the lights and sticker, but its still damn reliable.  apparently HD is jus like Ford, they forgot how to make reliable vehicles back in the day.

    Re: what cops drive

I saw on one of the tru tv shows that Russian Police now drive American made police vehicles. My department has the bigger engine cars, the newest ones being the suped up chargers, that they use for highway patrol or for special occasions.  For me, the 6 cylinder regular fords or chevys are more than fine because it's a big city with big city traffic so sooner or later regardless of the time of day a pursuit will come to a end with some form of traffic jam whether natural or police made.

in my state the cops ride BMW1200s

i was talkin to one of the popo riders and he said "when you ride towards a hill you have to lean forward and cover the headlight so that you have half a chance of making it up the hill"

all the cop cars are australian made but american owned companies in aus. cant beat american V8s

    Re: what cops drive

Well here in TX they drive Crown Vics, Chargers and Mustang, even once saw a Vet between San Antonio and Houston. They all have boosted/more powerful motors though. As far as two wheels, they seem to mostly ride Honda Goldwings here in SA

Vulgar display of power from obnoxiously overbuilt two wheeled cop bait. For good or bad, it is our life and our passion. if you share our dream of superior horsepower, we invite you to throw on your gear, notch it down into first, dump clutch, and ride among us.---------ICON

    Re: what cops drive

Here in Oklahoma the majority f the LEO vehicles are Crown Vic's fr the Cities and Chargers for the county and Hi-Po. They all have the Hardley bikes also. OHP does (now) have 3 Hayabusa's. The first two were drug repo's and the third one was recently purchased outright. A couple of the  outlying area's have the BMW bikes also. I've seen some LEO test vehicles also. The Lumina (usually a detective car), the Tahoe's (Lt or higher), Excursion, Saab (forgot the model) Volvo S-90, a couple of new Bugs, some F-150's (county mainly) and a few others I'm sure I'm forgetting. These days you never quite know WHAT is going to pull you over. lol

    Re: what cops drive

Here in Georgia all of the PDs are starting to change over to dodge magnums and chargers. I know the state patrol are now driving mostly dodge chargers. As far as bikes, i've seen harleys and BMWs.
