I assume you want to shift to stay longer in the air, don;t do it, just learn to pull the front wheel higher and play with the back brake if you go further than the balance point.  Shifting is not worth your time if your a newbie.  I've been stunting for a while now and just shifted once on a wheelie not cause I cant just cause it's useless.  I go behind balance point and use engine brakes to slow me down.

Re: Shifting while in a wheelie

Like others said don't bother with shifting. I thought I had it down a few years ago, then one day I shifted to second while riding one and the bike gave 2 quick sways right then left and pancaked to the right. It happend in like one second and there was nothing that could be done about it. Long story short I had a nice doctors bill and couldn't walk for a month. Not worth it... Just clutch it up in 2nd or 3rd and you'll be set.

Re: Shifting while in a wheelie

this is always a heated topic....lol   I agree that there is no real need to shift in a wheelie if you are good at BP.  I love shifting in sitdowns....you cant cluctch up in 5th or 6th.  I like to (rarely) get doin about 120+ and hit BP.  That is a huge rush knowing you are maintaining 120 in a wheelie.  If you shift without the clutch I could see looping it, but shifting in a wheelie is not all that different then on both wheels.  I get my bike up to just before BP, give it enough throttle to hit BP....then while at BP you pull the clutch and shift.  Just dont give it a bunch of gas or slip the clutch.  The timing happens so that you are coming down from BP just as you shift, so it takes a bit of torque to get the new gear back to bp for the next shift.

Re: Shifting while in a wheelie

Like he said, I thought I had it, and the exact thing happened, I looped it, and was out of work, and a bike for a little bit. But shifting on a wheelie is fun, but very iffy, especially on a carbureted bike. Unlike fuel injected bikes, carbureted bikes are never 100% consistent. But, if you don't listen to what everyone in here is saying, which you probably wont, get it up to balance point, and as you get to ALMOST the point that it starts to comeback down, let off the throttle for a slight second and jam it into second. When you let back on the throttle, be GENTLE on it cause it always seems to comeback further which if not dealt with right, will loop on you. So keep your foot on the rear brake, and be ready for it. But your best bet would be working on balance point parking lot wheelies until you get a lot better at holding up the front end, cause wheelies are fun, but that's how noobs get killed when they don't know what the fvck they are doing. So be careful, too many people die these days on rockets, and they few of us that are luck enough to have survived the crashes, are here to tell you guys who haven't to be careful.
