I'm going to have to disagree (but with no disrespect). By using your rear brake before the turn in paragraph 2 you would transfer the weight back to the rear wheel and stabilize the rear end so your not light in the corn, other wise at the first sign of throttle the ass end could brake lose in the turn and catch again when the acceleration makes the bike squat, then your talking highside. Or is that the subtle geometry changes your talking about?

Think about what you just said, does that really sound like one who is using the rear brake to scrub speed ??????????

Any braking is going to shift the weight of the bike forward....simple physics.  Pull the e-brake in your car and the front of the car will dive down.

Dude was not specific about when, where and how in his question. I don't know if he rides a 600 or 1000. I don't even think he knows what scrubb speed  means( no disrespect). In your statement it sounded like the rear brake has no purpose. I think all should learn how to use the rear brake and its not as taboo as most make it seem. I think we just misunderstood each others points and added specifics to this non-specific question.

I USE THE REAR BRAKE, LOL

No, or at least, I don't think that was what I said.  Well, I certainly didn't mean to imply that.  I agree that the original poster was kind of non-specific.  I merely stated how I use it and how many "advanced" riders use it in a "not for slowing down" kind of way.

your analogy to pulling a car's e-brake hardly works.  very few cars have a suspension similar to a motorcycle.  ladders bars and 4-links are the only similar suspensions that i can think of right now, n those r usually only found on lifted 4x4s, towing trucks, and race cars.

as for simple physics.... while weight does shift forward, it is not nearly as drastic as using the front brake.  more importantly, using the rear brake causes the bike to squat.  this squat, meaning a more shallow swingarm angle, can stabilize the rear end.  of course, all this doesnt do s*** if the rear tire is bouncing all over the place.

Re: rear brake who uses it?

Just to remain on-topic: I use the rear brake every day as I find myself riding to work in a very intense traffic. So, whenever I am riding between the cars stoped at a red light, I am slightly using the rear brake. When I'm riding outside town I use it only bellow 60-65 mph. it gives me a safety feeling, I feel the bike more stable. Of course, the front brake is used simultaneously.

Re: rear brake who uses it?

it all depends on how fast ur going, at fast speeds i like to use a 60, 40 ratio. and at slow speeds i like to use engine braking then i use my rear. i LOVE my rear brake!

Re: rear brake who uses it?

when is started, i was strictly msf and used the rear.

then i strated trackdays and wasn't comfortable using the rear anymore

now i'm riding a ttr125 which is ALL rear (barely touch the front) for some fun in the dirt

i plan on incorporating rear brake in racing with learnings from ttr125 in hopes to better my riding (such as just helping the rear settle down coming into a corner).

but, that last bullet is really wishful thinking right now. i'm spraying rogaine on the gonads to grow some hair and give me the balls to actually try it at least just in practice sessions.

maybe one day i learn enough to be like this guy (need something stronger than rogaine for the gonads)

    Hmm

Re: rear brake who uses it?

I myself never use the rear brake. Even going at just 30mph in a straight line I’ve had the back end go squirrely just tapping the rear brake. Every track and race school I’ve gone to takes emphasis away from using the rear brake. The AFM guys I’ve asked don’t use their rear brake. Guy like Dave Stanton, Chris Siglin, Kurt Spencer, Jeff Tigert (HRC USA test rider), Mike Solis, Ken Hill etc have said don’t use the rear brake. A big joke with them is that the only time they use the rear brakes is right before a crash. LOL. When you see these guys back it into a turn, it’s because of speed and they’re using modulation of the clutch to control it.

If you’re trying to “settle” the chassis because the front is loading up from braking or you’re getting excessive dive that means you’re getting a sudden compression in the working range of the springs. If you’re smooth with the controls and the forks are well setup, compression feels gradual and stable and no need for tricks to “settle” the chassis. At least this is how it was explained by Mike Solis who won the 650 twin class a few years ago and is the person Jeff Tigert (he’s HRC USA’s test rider and races AFM/AMA) attributes to Tigert going fast.

Just my 2 cents...take is for what it's worth.

Re: rear brake who uses it?

Please don't use the back break unless you're going under 30 mph, riding 2 up, or in a hot turn on a track with many hours of track time under your belt.  I know that they teach everyone at the motorcycle safety training to use both breaks but remember, they're training people that ride MUCH heavier bikes than the CBR's.  On a supersport, your weight is more on the front tire than on the rear.  You are positioned further up on the bike and are leaning forward where on a trouring and definitely on a cruiser, you are leaning MUCH further back.  That puts more weight over the back tire and increases traction.  You don't ever need to touch the back break on a supersport unless you are at a stop and wanna give your wrists a break.  I've been riding for 7 years, have always owned supersports, 600-1000's and except for my very first month of riding (after being taught at the MSF), have never used my back break for stopping again.  Have done a lot of track time and have held my own and been superior to many without ever touching the back break.  My only REALLY close call to an accident was because my rear break locked up in a panic stop comming to the crest of a hill with a red light on the other side.  Couldn't maneuver the bike correctly for fear of letting go of the back break, gaining traction again while sideways and high siding.  None of my friends use the rear break either and we ride REALLY fast.    Good luck and ride safe.

Re: rear brake who uses it?

rear break is a must! i use to be too heavy on the front and i would bottom out my front shocks all the time, not a very nice thing...

i try my best to use a combination of engine breaking, front/rear break... since i started practicing bliping throttle things have become much smoother too.

rear break can be tricky though, use it, just dont LOCK it :-)

Re: rear brake who uses it?

I use my rear break allot never by it self though. Theres a good chance u could lock the rear break up pressing it just a little to hard but if it locks up it isnt bad. I just practiced allot now it comes naturally using both break.

Re: rear brake who uses it?

I use my rear brake a fair amount but I don't stomp done on it, I let my front do 90% of the work
