hehe, naw i didnt miss your point.  i just ignored it because of the glaring lack of safety that u already kno about and because ive never even though about wearing such a helmet.  i bought my little brother one for his bday because i wanted to make sure he got a helmet that was DOT approved.... but look wat he did to it:

Ha Ha...I just noticed the initials on the container in the background....how ironicBig Smile

Just wondering if any body on occasion wears a "pot" or "german"  style helmet around town or other occasions?

I am almost 32, father of two and married. So if you are asking if I ever though of risking my own safety my leaving by Shoei X-Eleven at home so others would think I am cool.......the answer would have to be a resounding NO.

I will add to this that last week my wife and I went on a group ride with some friends that we met outside of motorcycling. Come to find out they all ride cruisers. No problem. I am not a snob. So the wife and I show up to ride. She and I are wearing jeans, gloves, boots, leather jackets and full face helmets. Some of the others were wearing helmets, some not. All were wearing t-shirts or long sleeve t's. At the end of the six hour ride who do you think was feeling better? Most of them were wind and sunburned. My wife and I were a little sweaty, but it's amazing what happens when you get moving and that sweat starts to evaporate.

Buy a quality lid and see how much "cooler" you are. ;) You wouldn't believe how many comments I get on my Bostrom Rep. X-11 and I know that if my noggin bounces off the pavement face first my kids will still recognize me.

Don't be another "too cool to be safe" cruising fatality.

Oh, and earplugs will work wonders on that whole headache thing too.

Re: Who has a "pot helmet"??

Not real sure what the stats are for, I'm 34 and married with a little girl. I've road since I was 5 and had my license since I was 17.   I log over 13000 miles( and that's on the low side) annually. And trust me I don't do any thing just because its "cool". As a matter of fact I find that train of thought to be pathetic at best. As for the ear plugs, I do wear them, the original post i complained of dehydration headaches as a bit of a side note. I'm looking into possibly a camel back to solve that problem.

It bugs the crap out of me that any one would push their views  on to any one else ..let alone ridicule them for viewing life and how they chose to live it in a different way. I for one have always choose to lead by example, rather than ridicule .And if some one wants to be a knuckle head, that's their choice to make. I never said I was getting one.... I was thinking about it.....and have been for like 13 years. Yet I still only have my 3 full face helmets (granted, only 2 are Snell since one is a modular flip up). What i wanted was to hear from, was the other side( people who have them). Never got that perspective. Its made this entire post seem like a waste.......I'm really not sure why so many have choose to re-post the same sentiment over and over...It is truly redundant. how does anyone feel they are adding anything worth wild to the post when the words and concept are nearly identical . And its not the message of safety that I take to task. It is the "matter of fact"  How dare you think that way" attitude. It really has taken on a "mob rules" perspective. Where is all of this type of ranting in the "WHEELIES AND STUNTS"  section? That has to be considerably more dangerous than the suggestion of the purchase of a pot helmet. yet hardly a word? As a matter of fact the amount of posts that give stunting tips and advice make this for the most part hypocritical at best.......

Re: Who has a "pot helmet"??

I am not here to start an argument or anything, in-fact I had never even planned on joining this site, since my husband is the rider not myself.  However upon seeing the responses to a simple yes or no question I cannot bite my tongue.  I can understand wanting to advise someone on the safety of something, however DO NOT ASSUME that you know everything about someone because of one question that they asked.  A question is just that, a question that desires an answer- not a whole outright opinion on the facts of things you know nothing about.  To try to assume that my husband is not a safe rider just because he posed a question about a pot helmet is ridiculous and plain out immature on anyone's behalf. My husband owns icon protective jeans, he owns an icon field armor vest, and several alpine stars jackets that have built in Kevlar.  We live right next to Delaware which is a helmet free state, and yet he has NEVER ridden his bike without.  He is one of the safest people I know that rides a bike and I trust him well enough to climb on the back of that bike with him any time he goes riding.  (and that says a lot considering I value the crap outta my life) I would NEVER get on a bike with anyone other than him for fear that their value of life is not as high as my husbands... So PLEASE do not assume that because he asked a question about something that you view as the end all of carelessness that he is not a safe rider.... and don't assume from reading a question that you know someones entire life story or the kind of person they are, that is quite presumptuous of you huh?? The question was posed, and the explanation as to why the question was posed is all right in the first original post...including stating that he knows they aren't the safest thing but he was just curious...yet everyone got sidetracked on the whole headache, safety, blah blah whole damn thing...it was a simple question, if you don't have one then either DONT respond, or just shortly say I don't have one, I agree that it is ridiculous to see such an outpouring of a need for safe gear when there are people on this site that give suggestions to people on how to stunt and wheelie, when you don't even know the other rider you are instructing... they ask how to perform said stunt and get tons of replies as to how it can be achieved yet do you ever think of their safety? No you want to prove that you know how to perform said stunt to prove that you are indeed the "cool" one, now consider for five minutes that the person behind the screen that you just explained how to perform a wheelie to takes that advice out and does it on a major road and wrecks not only them self but a car trying to avoid them as they were wrecking, what about the riders family, or the driver of the cars family? did you think of them before you advised how to perform this action? I'm gonna guess no, yet you take the 5 minutes it takes to come up with all kinds of reasons someone shouldn't show slight curiosity in a pot helmet.  Do you go to helmet free states and shake your finger at all the riders who don't wear em because their state doesn't require it? Didn't think so... next time before you post a response to a question, read the question and consider whether your response actually deals with the question at hand or is just you spouting off at the finger tips because you have the all mighty better than you complex.  And before this starts some huge debate, just realize the original question was a simple one, that seeked a simple answer, the question was NOT please inform me of the safety hazards of a pot helmet. In my husbands 34 years I am sure he has learned enough about riding to do the safety research on his own...the question was posted I assume to find out who has one or has worn one, and what they thought about the experience NOT what people thought about their safety. by posing all the safer than thou responses it opened this can of worms.... Re: Who has a "pot helmet"??

Brother by posting your question you asked for opinions.

I really don't care how you rephrase it, you are telling us you are thinking about downgrading your safety equipment so you can look cool while cruising.

If you don't like us ranting it's no big deal. I don't pay your co-pay. I won't be invited to your funeral and I won't have to explain to your wife what happened. It only takes seeing a couple of piles of ground beef brought into the ER to reinforce exactly how far "cool" will get you.

Think of this as a "peer pressure" thing trying to save your skin.

Re: Who has a "pot helmet"??

Well you can add another worthless post since it will be from one with no personal experience with half helmets but a couple of thoughts on your post anyway:

Personally, I don't know how we can discuss riding with half helmets without the issue of safety as it is a major part of it. That's the whole point of ANY helmet.

Being one like yourself who always puts safety first and is always the one trying to talk my friends out of going with half helmets (a few of them constantly talk about wanting half helmets for short rides or beach rides) ... during these past few weeks in the midst of a 5000 mile road trip I did something I thought I would never ever do in my life: in a state with no helmet laws I rode a couple of times without a helmet on short slow rides because the weather was oppresively hot .. over 107 degrees in the desert and all I can say is I felt naked and will never do it again. Sure it felt a bit free and open but the naked unsafe feeling I got while riding without a helmet (which I assume would be similar to a half helmet) not only didn't give me the more refreshing feeling I thought it would (it actually felt like my head was baking in the sun MORE) but the constant uneasy feeling of possible major brain damage at any second from any one pulling in front of me even at slow speeds made the ride very very unenjoyable. Obviously a half helmet wouldn't be as extreme as no helmet at all as stated previously but compared to full face helmet I venture to guess I would feel the same as it still offers very little protection and is in essence only a way to skirt laws.

This is not a slam or insult on what you want to do or judgement on whatever you decide but just my personal thoughts on my own recent experience since I assume that is what you're asking for. I don't think anyone was flaming you for your thoughts, I think they where just looking out for your safety as a fellow cyclists who all want to see you live without unnecessary injuries that is so easly avoidable. imnsho you wouldn't have posted the question if you weren't a bit apprehensive about it (as I was as well) to begin with.

Re: Who has a "pot helmet"??

That is just my point, you DO have a perspective that I felt was worth hearing.  I  feel that not wearing a  helmet is in the same range of feeling and experience. I wanted to hear opinions about it since it would be equal or less protection and sensation. I didnt feel you were spouting off with  a textbook style view with out ever wearing one , but rather real world lessons and feeling  that you your self experienced. Whitch was why I asked for input from people WITH pot helmets in the first place.

You did not tell me what I should or shouldnt do, but rather you shared an experience that moved you toward one decision or another.  You got it right! And you didnt act as if you have to try to force your point on me.
