Re: upshifting without clutch...
ffingers:not necessarily automatically...
think of it this way, you preload the shifter by giving it pressure.....when you are ready to shift, you sort of blip the throttle a bit, let off...and at that same time, you apply the rest of the needed pressure to the shifter and it will slide right up, then you immediately get back on the throttle....if done correctly, it is incredibly smooth...
i am like the other poster, i clutch shift 1 to 2 and clutchless the rest of the way...unless i am low in the RPMs...it's harder to do if you are under 5k (i know you shouldn't be...haha)....
so in summary....
1) on gas above 5k 2) put pressure on the shifter, i.e., start pressing it up until you feel resistance 3) get on the throttle real quick 4) let off the throttle and at same time finish the shift with your foot 5) get back on the gas 6) enjoy your new skill!!!
Perfect explanation - thank you! I think it will be no problem, but it's just getting up the bullocks to try it.

its very easy and i perfer it when going into a higher gear when riding fast. its basically the same as doing a regular shift except faster and without using the clutch

Re: upshifting without clutch...
Alright, here's an update!
I think I was almost doing this anyway, because when I >5K rpms I would very, very quickly nail it (with the clutch) into the next gear - I'm talking a lightning fast pop up with the clutch.
So last night I tried going "clutchless," but wanted to just post what I'm doing in case I could potentially be screwing up the tranny.
So rising above 6K, I back off the throttle ever so slightly, kick it up a gear, then back on the throttle almost simutaneously. Now I am not pushing the gear lever up ahead of time like has been mentioned, just quickly popping it into the next gear.
When I do it, it sounds as if the engine is not skipping a beat from one gear to the next. There is just a teeny tiny mili-second pause in sound from one gear to the next. So I am pretty sure that I got it, but with not "lining it up ahead of time" for the next gear and just kicking it in I wanted to get some feedback. Oh, I also somehow hit a neutral/missed a gear around 4th/5th which was strange.

when im doing clutchless shirts im usually red lining it or very close to but yea i think u got it. i dont "line it up" ahead of time either. i dont think it really matters what rpm you are on when doing clutchless up shifting as long as your doing it correctly. for me its being on the gas, letting off the gas and upshifting at the same time and then back on the gas. the neutral or missed gear happens when you dont upshift hard enough. kick the lever up with some ummphh. sometimes we get lazy and trust me ive had my fair share times of it happening and reving super loud due to being in neutral and giving it alot of gas lol

What's the chance of tanny damage?
unfortunately, quite high

Re: upshifting without clutch...
Guess I'm old school, that little lever on your left was put there for a reason, use it. Seriously how much time are you saving by using it? Really? That's the same school of thought that dropping 12oz off your chain weight is gonna make you that much faster, go take a *** if you wanna drop 12oz. Yes, if you're racing every weekend then I could see it, but the same people that are doing that are also changing tranny's and chains quite a bit and not worried about long term wear on parts. Me, I like my bikes to run tip-top, so the wear will hopefully be minimal.

For street riding, I agree with you that you aren't saving any time. But the original question wasn't "how much time do I save??"
Think of this in the context of racing (or better yet, drag racing). Those split seconds easily make the difference between winning and losing.

Re: upshifting without clutch...
You're right, the question wasn't about saving time, but was neither about racing. The original question was upshifting without a clutch, and he heard he could do it. Sure you can do it, I can jump off the back of the bike and ski behind it too, but sure as hell wouldn't. I could also nail megan fox too, but would get arrested attempting to. Unless you're racing for cash or a 10 dollar wooden plaque, my $.02 says to not be a lazy *** and use the lever :thumbsup
abadfish, I remember when you registered on this site back about a hundred years ago rolling an old Fsomething, good for you for sticking around and still riding red bro. Anyone seen Shanny?

Re: upshifting without clutch...
Wearing out parts by shifting clutchless??? I ve got 35000miles on the clock and only use the clutch basicly in first and down shifting (not counting cruising, low rpm shifting of course). No abnormal wear to speak of here.........
CBR929-jardine race can, down 1, polished frame and swing arm, wheels polished, HELI bars, Sargent seat, Puig racing screen
commuting on a VLX600 shadow for now, 60MPG!!! I punched out the baffles, so it has that V-twin snap and crackle that made H/D so infamous. Except this little scute is rice powered!!lol

Re: upshifting without clutch...
You read your replies? You have 35K on the odo, how much of that is "cruising, and low rpm shifting of course"? I know you don't have 35K in TD's, but again, badfish pointed out what the question was initially, which was, can he shift without clutch. Yes. You certainly can, but not adviseable. Period. And if you argue that not using a clutch long term will not damage moving parts, you're high.

Re: upshifting without clutch...
I dont do much cruisiing , but more to the point i do shift a LOT and I mean a LOT clutchless. please explain to me exactly what parts are going to get damaged when you blip the throttle and make the shift off power? It is just as smooth and seamless as doing it with the clutch .
Ive been riding on the street over 16 years and 5 bikes, with tons of friends and Ive never heard of any one having any serious or even noticable damage from shifting clutchless. I will conceide that improper abuse it's self can cause damage, but you can do that with the clutch as well. Properly executed , clutchless is no worse than shifting with a clutch. And i'm not high...I'm right. but I'll skip the pointless insults, i'm a little above 3rd grade name calling and finger pointing.

This one time last year i popped a little wheelie in first, clutchless upshift into 2nd then went straight into the side of a Fiat. . . .clutchless upshifting didn't help me then did it? Wrote the bike off in fact.
Beware kids, it'll ruin your entire front end.
abdfish, i remeber you too....you had a smoking joes f2 didn't ya? Think so. . .used to do akido or some such? Or am I losing the plot..........?

Re: upshifting without clutch...
That was a parts failure, you had a loose nut attached to the Steering head some how.

You know what, fine, you're right, good for you, carry on, I hope the cost of you being te clutchless wizard is low, and I don't wanna hear you crying when one day you're riding along and your bike is difficult to shift. Have a good day.
