Re: Frustrated...bike is leaking mixture of oil/gas from exhaust where slip-on meets

First of all....... it's not oil mixed with the gas, that's just the carbon from the exhaust that the fuel is mixing with as it runs down the inside of the header.

2nd - are the plugs in the right order?  the 2 outside plugs look horrible, while the 2 inner plugs look clean-like from gas.  The 2 outer cyl are not running right either.  if you want to check the coils out-to eliminate them just switch them around- switch 2 and 3 with 1 and 4.- make sure you mark them before you do this so you know what coil came out of what cyl.  I would try the fuel pressure regulator as stated above.  You can check it out to see if the regulator is working.  Unbolt it from the fuel rail, and try to suck on the end with the vaccum(sp?) hose.  while you're sucking on it try and stick your tongue over the end of the line, then remove your tongue,  and see if it releases the vaccum you've created.  if there's no difference, it is NFG.  It could also be your injectors staying open, either by the regulator, dirt/shite fuel,  or ecm related.   But I'm not there, so I can't say for certain.  I can say I don't think it's an ignition problem, because there's no way gas could leak out like that with the injector working properly.  Now- yes,  you do have a spark problem, but it's indirectly caused by the fuel problem.   Does that make sense?

BTW,....... I'd be doing an oil change after you figured this problem out.  Not only is the fuel running out the exhaust, but I guarantee it's also running down past the rings into the oil pan.  Pull the oil fill cap, and smell inside the engine.  I bet it reaks of gas.

Also be careful because if you do get too much gas in the cyls, the piston cannot compress the gas(in liquid form), and then you bend a rod.  It's called "hydralic lock."  and yes it does happen, and no it's not pretty.

    Keep us updated

    Jeff

Re: Frustrated...bike is leaking mixture of oil/gas from exhaust where slip-on meets

Thanks you everyone for your input, Jeff, you are right that it is not oil (that was what i thought initially when it first happened), it is only fuel.

Secondly, no, the plugs are not in the right order nor were the ignition coils, i didnt keep track of which coil/plug/cylinder I pulled from, so they all went back in random order and the condition still exists on the 2 inner cylinders.  So i think all the coils are okay!

I read the thing about the FPR, can the FPR put out too much gas that would drown the spark like Hubbard mentioned?  I bet anything the FPR on mine is either going bad or is bad based on age of the bike. So that will probably get replaced now.

And I have fresh oil and filter on standby until i get the problem solved.  I was hoping after i replaced the plugs and the bike fired up properly I was going to change it then but still no luck........

I'm going to mess with it this week, if I can't get any more clearer diagnosis on it, I will have to get it in the shop.

Re: Frustrated...bike is leaking mixture of oil/gas from exhaust where slip-on meets

Yeah, that is basicly what happens when an engine is flooded. the fuel isnt warm enough to evaporate to a vapor or fume so it just puddles in the bottom on the piston. When you choke it you actualy cut back the amount of air to make what little vapor there is more flamable ( since you cant add fuel to the air/fuel mix, you subtract air till the proportions are right for an explosion) So yeah it "could" drown the spark in theory.

okay...im going to order a FPR today from ronayers.com.....

i will work on it some more this weekend....so not to sound like a dummy, as far as testing spark, so pull the coil (im gonna use one of my old plugs that i pulled out that still looked okay), start the bike, what do i ground it to??? and  how??  just run a thick wire from it to where?

Re: Frustrated...bike is leaking mixture of oil/gas from exhaust where slip-on meets

Well....guys.....Thanks to all for your help and advice, it was indeed a faulty FPR, I got around to replacing it today, the leak was still there for about 5 minutes after starting it and i was just thinking...DANGIT! it didnt fix it, but it sounded like all 4 cylinders were firing, i water spray tested it and they are all hitting, after a bit the leak did stop and i got it warmed up, changed the oil and i did have gas in my oil, the texture was definitely noticeable and the smell of gas was very apparent.

Just got done with a ride around the block, its running like a champ!  I'll get it washed and ready for a fun week ahead.

Thanks again to all, forums rock!!!!!  wheelie
