    Re: what cops drive

We drive Crown Vic Police Interceptors. They are 4.6L V8's. The motor officers ride Harley Davidson Road King Police models.

The CVPI does just fine for 99% of the work we do. Most of the time I am driving 20mph down alleys or 30mph over curbs and through housing project courtyards (that's my version of a foot pursuit). I have yet to loose a vehicle pursuit due to a lack of power. If the other vehicle is faster, traffic and driving skill usually even the field. Also remember that we have radios and Spike Strips. For a big honking car the CVPI handles well.

We have looked at smaller cars (the Chevy Impala) but they were a dismal failure. I wear 20lbs of crap around my waist and have another 150lbs of gear in the trunk. You run out of room fast.

We will probably be going to the Dodge Charger next. The have the V6 putting out more power than the CVPI and using less gas. Plus the interior room is supposed to be very good. We will see how our test model holds up.

The Harleys are totally for show. There are sooo many other options that would work better. Tradition dictates that we ride Harleys and wear polyester. Embarrassed

As far as American VS. Imports. How long do you think the politician that OK's purchasing imports would stay in office? The only exception being a vehicle from one of the Domestic Import factories. (i.e. Toyota is just up the road) The problem is they don't make anything suited to police work.

Yeah, I always wondered whats up with bike cops dressed up in El Capone era  uniforms.  It doesnt look very comfortable either and i dont think it offers any protection whatsoever.  Is it the case that "spill" rate for motoPopos is very low?

It appears that Hawaii has "anything goes" approach for patrol cars.  I've seen everything, mustangs, camrys, accords, crown vics.  They just slap a blue antique-looking siren on top and woala, a police vehicle.

I was surpised with the number of BMW and Mercedes cab cars that I saw in Europe.  They're RWD and I'm sure if a cab company can afford them then a US police department can do the same with quantity discount.  There's no need to mention the vast gap in performance between a ford/chevy and a beemer either.

Keep in mind that the models that you see used as cabs in Europe are not the export models that arrive in the US. The US models have a much higher trim level and better safety equipment (safety glass, emissions, airbags, etc). The cost difference is HUGE. It's the same reason you don't see a lot of Ford Crown Vic's used as cabs in Europe. It would break the bank to import them and use them there. We did get a kick out of being carted around to the bars in Mercedes when I was in Palma.

First post here, and I can't figure out how to post without "replying" but anyhow, police primarily drive Chargers, Magnums, Honda & BMW bikes here.  As far as the power goes, they have PLENTY, especially the HEMI chargers.  Plus police vehicles are configured differently sorta like chipped.

    Re: what cops drive

Here, the State Police use the Crown Vic. P.I.  or the Tahoe. BMW, Honda st1300, and H.D.

In years past the State used the Tarus SHO .  and towns used what ever they wanted, I got stoped one night in the late 90's. I Reved at a mustang(tring toget a race) and it was under cover. Twin turbo 5.0 from a drug bust!! The cop poped the hood so I could see. Then cut me loose with a grin. No badges, just a dash light !
