Q: Are there any differences between OEM and aftermarket?
A: The OEM cleaning element is made of paper while the aftermarket filters use a cotton element. Most would agree that any performance differences are small and barely noticeable. Some would even question whether or not they provide more air flow. The OEM filter is designed to be for one-time use while aftermarket filters are washable and can be re-used.
Q: How often should air filters be replaced?
A: The OEM filters are recommended to be inspected every 12k miles and replaced if necessary. According to K&N's web site, K&N filters should be cleaned every 50k miles. BMC recommends their filters be cleaned every 25k miles. Of course, these mileages will also depend on the environment in which your operate your bike.
