Hello all!  Making my cbrworld.net debut here.  I've recently purchased an '88 hurricane, learning to ride while also working on my fab/resto skills. The bike looks good from far away, but the more I dig into fixing the little things, the more odd things I'm finding that have been done to the bike. 

The biggest issue at hand is that most of the plastics are missing the bolt tabs and are held on with zip ties or epoxy, and I've found a couple spots where body filler has been used to fuse panels together.  Sure, it looked clean, but after applying a little pressure while trying to get the front left to better fit to the frame... well... let's just say I "unfused" a seam. Oops.

Like so many other people, I'm seriously considering the streetfighter look.  I've done a lot of looking around here, cbrextreme, customfighters, and west michigan riders, and I'm really drawn to naked/fightered bikes. 

Here's the gut check part- what exactly would I be getting myself into?  Once I take these plastics off, I'm committed (don't know if I could ever get them back on!) .  This being my first bike, I think it would present a good opportunity to get to know the mechanics of the bike.  But what all would be required for conversion to a basic, simple streetfighter?  From the research I've done, it sounds like it's simple- but please, correct me if I'm wrong. 

At this point, I've seen posts regarding relocation of the oil cooler and the fuse box, as well as extending of the turn signal wires and re-routing of majority of wires to an under-tank situation. I know there's something to "learnin' by doin'", but I just want to make sure this is something I can tackle without having the bike off the road for too long.  Is this something that could be a one weekend project?
 

 I would say no, simply because nothing seems to ever go right with these kinds of MODS. I'm sure you know what i mean - while attempting to change a turn signal you break off the bulb in the socket- get your pliers and try to dig it out and rip the socket out of the stalk and so on.................But you should be able to tackle it in sections. And I've seen lots of guys ride with partial fairings while doing repairs, so...... For the begining i would do only K.I.S.S type mods(keep it simple stupid). and talk to every one and any one that will listen for advice. Most guys who do these mods, realy love doing it and will be more than happy to help!  Good look!!

commuting on a VLX600 shadow for now, 60MPG!!! I punched out the baffles, so it has that V-twin snap and crackle that made H/D so infamous. Except this little scute is rice powered!!lol

I agree. You're going to want to make sure what ever you mod is very much secure and feels right. That takes time to do when you're on your own. One step and section at a time.

Thanks for the input, guys.  I've got a couple good friends that got me into riding, they're going to be helping me out.  Nonetheless, I get what you're both saying- Don't dive head first if you don't know how deep the water is.

My wife will be out of town for a little over a week towards the end of the month, I'll see if I can hold off until then.  When she's gone I need projects to keep me out of trouble   Then again, I may want it to be on the road at that point, since I'll have all the riding time I want... I guess I'll wait and see what happens.
