    Battery voltage question

93 F2 600. So while im waiting for my battery to charge to run thru the tutorial on the charging system, had a strange thing i observed on the battery while messing with it:

With multimeter on the battery i turn the key on and observe the voltage dropping down quickly just with the key on.  Probably down to 4 volts in like 10 seconds. Had a load test on the battery the other day and it passed but seems very odd to lose all that voltage with key on and no load. So im thinking the battery is shot even though it passed the load test. Or there is a serious short in the iginition circuit or somewhere else.

WIll diagnose tomorrow but wondering if anyone has any insight. A battery shouldnt discharge like this so i assume it;s shot.  Maybe this very simple test on the batt voltage with the key on is a simple and useful exercise.

    Re: Battery voltage question

I dont think you would have a short, that kind of drop from a short would also bring smoke and maybe even fire.A  bad batt. will get what some call a "surface charge". Once charged you get 13 or so volts, but the charge is shallow and drops off quick. Means the batt. is toast. Of course that should mean it wouldnt pass the load test either???

    Re: Battery voltage question

Try unpluging your headlight then retry the test.....maybe the load test wasn't performed properly.....Hubbard is right,,,,lol, there would definetly be a lot of smoke or something........  electrical problems are always a pain in the butt eh?

    Re: Battery voltage question

If your battery is dropping to those voltages you most likely have a bad cell or two in the battery. Start the bike check the voltage the bike should be around 13 plus volts then wait a few minutes and while you have the volt meter attached turn the bike off you should only drop down to 12 volts if it drops down to 4 volts as before then your battery is bad.

    Good luck.

    Re: Battery voltage question

And bear in mind you do have time to test and find the problem, but you want to get a new batt. soon!  extended running on a bad batt. can over work your stator or reg./rec. leading to early failure.

Just saying, you dont want to wait to long.......I wouldnt do any real rides till you figure it out .
