Like I said in another very similar post, old bikes get a bit finiky. Try playing with the choke position. On my older bike I would have to start it on full choke, then as soon as it starts I would decrease the choke a bit, and after about 30 seconds I would have to decrease it again, and that actually makes the RPMs shoot up. In the cold my bike likes to warm up at about 70% choke.
I dont know if you ever owned an old carburated car but every driver would know exactly how far and at what moment to pull that choke plunger depending on the conditions. haha
