    F2 Fuel Tap Question

    Normal 0 Hi there,
I have a 1992 F2 and its always suffered a bit from stalling a few minutes after it is fired up in the morning. I usually just rev the nuts off it and it recovers but if I don’t catch it in time it dies and I have to bounce up and down on the seat to make it go again. I didn’t really understand why that worked until I read the threads on here about the vacuum pump and tapping the fuel tap with a screwdriver to get it going.

A few days ago I tried to start it and it caught for a few seconds and then stopped and wouldn’t go again no matter how much bouncing I did. So I took the tank off to have a look at the fuel tap because someone had said to me before that it might be the cause of the stalling problem. I removed the tap from the tank and dismantled the thing. Much like the other stories about the fuel tap on this bike there was nothing obviously wrong with the parts so I put them back together.

I thought I would manually check the operation of the vacuum so I poured some fuel into the main tank tube and sucked on the vacuum hose port but there was no pressure, I just sucked air through and nothing happened, apart from getting some fuel in my eye. So I stared at the tap for a while and eventually noticed a small tube protruding from the bottom of the plate that screws on over the diaphragm and spring and what have you. I repeated the fuel in the eye test only this time I put my thumb over the small tube in question and voila, fuel down the side of my face and in my ear. With my thumb over this small tube it felt like there was pressure resisting my suction and the tap operated as it should.

I looked through my manual and eventually found a picture of the fuel tap and sure enough the mystery pipe is meant to be there. I'm well confused now as this small pipe appears to prevent the tap from generating a vacuum and yet it looks from the manual that it is the correct fuel tap for the bike.

Can anyone shed light on this? There is no diagram of the fuel tap components in my manual so I cant tell if there should be something blocking that hole and there isn't any info about servicing or correct assembly so any help here would be much appreciated.

    Re: F2 Fuel Tap Question

i have been having the same problem, sometimes my bike starts up fine no problem and sometimes it will start right away but as warming up it will start to bog down, no matter if i try to rev mor rpm. once it dies it wont start no matter what i do. Carburetor is getting gas, there's spark and good compression, Bike starts if i prime the carbs. Mechanic told me it was starving for fuel because my valves are too tight. Valves was readjusted and so far my bike ran a lot lot better(Faster) and not to mention starts up fine no problem anymore cross my fingers. So hope this helps.
