    Re: Braking with 2 fingers

i use 4 on the clutch and 2 on the brake since i got the crg levers.

i have really buff fingers from doing 1 inch punches, finger push ups, 2 finger pull ups, eye gouges, fish hooks a nose picking.

4 on the clutch, last 3 (middle, ring, pinky) on the brake.  unorthodox, but feels totally natural to me.  *shrug*

    Re: Braking with 2 fingers

I just like the feel from two fingers. I use two on the brake and clutch unless I am in stop and go traffic. Then I switch up to 4 on the clutch to keep from wearing them out.

Later this year I am switching over to CRG shorties so I run less of a chance of losing fingers in a crash.

    Re: Braking with 2 fingers

I always use two, I always have two on the brake at all times, don't ask why, it just feels comfortable to me. Under normal braking all I need is two fingers.

    Re: Braking with 2 fingers

I recently switched from 2 on the brake to 1. I also recentky switched from a Thunderace to a CBR954RR Big Smile [:D]
I do use 4 on the clutch though.

    Re: Braking with 2 fingers

Have you tried any panic braking exercises with only one finger?

I know they 954rr has a different master cylinder then the F4i, but I find on the F4i that one finger makes me work too had to get maximum braking. Having to squeeze too hard causes you to loose "feel" on the brakes.

It's all personal preference as long as you can pickup the back wheel with whatever technique you are using. It's just that I would think that in any kind of spririted riding or in-town stop and go, you would wear that one finger out pretty quick.

I  can't wait until I can afford some CRG "shorty" levers. Everyone raves about them, and I think they would add a nice amount of "bling" to my otherwise "bling-less" bike.

    Re: Braking with 2 fingers

CervMX and I started on similar bikes.  I started on the '84 ZX550 which was the evolution of the KZ550 he rode (both bore the monaker of GPZ550).  I could grab 4 fingers of brake on that bike and not even think about making the rear come up.  Then I bought my 954RR and took my lisence test with it.  On the LAST thing to do on the test I grabbed 3 fingers of the front break and endo'd the heck out of it.  I learned from then on that 2 fingers is more than enough for almost any situation.  Even on my F2 with crap brakes that are desperately in need of an new brakes, 2 fingers is enough to bring the back up with ease.

    Re: Braking with 2 fingers

I don't think this has been addressed but if you use two fingers, and I do, which two fingers do you use? Most people here have said two and they're indicating the index and middle fingers. I've found that by using the middle and ring fingers that I can easily modulate the brake better and apply maximum force when necessary on the brake. Same thing applies to the clutch, except that maximum force isn't really necessary there, just enough to pull the lever to where the clutch disengages. I keep left pinky finger on the bar and I pull the clutch to that point. That's all you need to disengage and shift. Any more and you're wasting time shifting.

    Re: Braking with 2 fingers

I use 2 fingers if im doing stoppies or riding hard, or 1 finger if im just in traffic

Also use 2 fingers on the clutch for traffic driving, or 1 for wheelies and riding hard

edit: I think the whole point in using 2 fingers is so you can still hold onto your handlebars..
I know I dont like to wheelie with more then 1 finger on the clutch, gotta keep that *** under control

    Re: Braking with 2 fingers

This may have already been said, but I brake with one finger. It is enough for me...it allows you to keep your hand on the throttle too

    Re: Braking with 2 fingers

I think the 4 finger brake method was helpful when bikes had drum brakes and you'd have to really squeeze to get that bike slowed down. I had a little 71 CB350 with front drum brakes and the force needed to slow that little 250lb bike down from 40mph was a whole lot more than getting my 400lb F4 or 748 slowed from 80mph.

With modern sport bike braking system 2 fingers provide more than enough stopping force.  Additionally, braking and using the clutch with two fingers lets you keep your other fingers on the bars (why wouldn't anyone prefer that?) Say you out on a nice peice of road or tracks and really cooking you're shifting your weight around, giving counter steer inputs, braking and accelerating rapidly - the option of using 4 fingers to do what 2 can do seems useless.

If anyone mountain bikes two fingers are the norm, with the bike jumping around on you descding a hill why would you want to take more fingers/control off the bars if you don't have too.

Rossi does what rossi does - it's like telling Jimi Hendrix he's got his gutar strings on upside down. Rossi also recently said in an interview he doesn'tlook at the exits of turns, he prefers to keep his eyes down (WTF!!!) This should not be done at home.

Those stories of loosing fingers because so and so used 2 insted of 4 sounds pretty unsubstantiated  - I think most would agree that the best way to reduce injury to your hands would be wear the best gloves you can (i.e. gauntlet style track gloves)

2 fingers on break 2 fingers on clutch... feels right and works well in my experience, but each to his/her own i suppose.

    abadfish:

Its all personal preference.  I use two fingers because I then use my other fingers to blip the throttle as I'm downshifting.

But what do I know......Rossi uses 4 fingers.  Stick out tongue

....As Rossi has a slipper clutch and a crew of mechanics to rebuild his bike so doesnt really need to bother with blipping!

Two if brakes feeling fine and plenty of meat on pads, four if needing to pull the leaver in a lot to get a bite!

    Re: Braking with 2 fingers

Ive read to use two and two. Two on the clutch lever will allow you to have good control and the two fingers on the grip will govern how much clutch you pull. Pretty much the same for the brake lever.
