Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

Ok, I finally did this swap.  Everything seems to work nicely, BUT, does the bike need to be running for the gauge illumination to light up?  I turn the key 1 click, and I get the tach spin/countdown/blinking lights, but my gauges aren't illuminated.  I'd start it up, but I have no oil in it right now, no muffler, etc.

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

    Hi,
Thanks for this posting it really helps with doing the mod to my F3. I was wondering if you ever thought about adding the F4I fuel sensor to your F3 tank. Please any feed back on this topic I would really apperciate it.

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

I got no idea about the fuel sensor, sorry, i just don't know much about how they work.  I would assume that if the tanks hold aproximately the same amount of fuel then that might work, but i dont know what kind of signal they send or anything.

Hey man. you need to add that the  98-99 900rr thermostat fits the f3 and works with the f4i guages.

BTW nice work on the write up!

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

I have a question about connecting a wire from the F4I gauges directly to the battery. When I turn off my bike the clock on the gauges stay on. Does this happen to your bike and will it drain the
    battery over time?

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

yeah it stays on.  i personally havent had any issues with this - i believe that the clock stays on on the stock f4i

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

Got mine put on today...took a total of about 2 1/2 hours start to finish including thinking up a way to mount the gauges.  I ended up using a piece of Lexan, cut in a rectangle big enough to fit over the 3 mounting holes on the bike.  The screwed the gauges to the Lexan, and bolted it to the bike....pretty ghetto, but it works, and looks pretty cool, since it's clear, I can see all the wires and crap behind and have plenty of room to mount other switchs/ indicators later.

One question, do the F4i gauges have a light for the side stand?  On the top, there is a red light to the left of the neutral light that stays on, but I'm assuming this is for the temp?  Still haven't gotten around to ordering the new temp sensor, but that will come soon.

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

Hi everyone have just joined the site, living in the UK, have done the swap after coming across this forum, and am well happy, just to add my bit, yes the red light to the left is for the hi temp, as for the clock back lights being on all the time, mine come on with the lights, but if im right the USA models have the lights on all the time, as for the green wires does it matter which one go's to earth with the pink wire?
And the thermostat from a 900rr is it the sender that is needed or the whole thing?

    cheers

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

Ive heard that the wiring on an f2 and an f3 are totally opposite and that the f4i guage swap on an f2 would not be possible. My question is that I have an 93 f2 frame with a 98 f3 motor, trans., suspension, and brakes. Is it possible for me to do the swap with ease or will it just be a hassle and not be worth it at all?

    thanks

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

I would assume that you would be able to do the swap then...what gauges do you have on it now?  The reason that the F4i gauges won't fit an F2 but they will an F3 is because the F2 uses mechanical things for the speedo/tach, while the F3 and F4i both use electrical.

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

I know when the motor was swapped the speedo stopped working because its mechanical and the f3 speedo is from the tranny. But the tach still worked when the motor was swapped.

So im not sure if it would be a pain to do the conversion.

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

You should be ok, as the speedo sensor is on the F3 engine, there should be a white plug by the thermostat which i think go's to the top of the gearbox, should have 3 wirers green, pink and black(i think) which then connect to the F4i clocks.
