    Re: F4i Dual Headlight Mod

    Thanks for the info 909,

I tested out the bulbs and theyre fine, so it's got to be the wiring somewhere. The bike starts up just fine, so before double checking the wiring which seems very solid, I'll check the fuses this week.

I mean when doing this mod, there IS a increase in current draw right? Cuz we're always using both bulbs. So I'm guessing it's very likely my headlight fuse went out.

Out of curiosity, did any of you guys had to up your headlight fuse??

    I do. I change the fuse to 15 (or 20A) on my friend's F4i.

    Re: F4i Dual Headlight Mod

its very possible the headlight fuse went out.  check it.. and up it by 5 amps if it did blow..

however, the increase in current doesnt' always mean use a higher fuse.

for instance.. you wire a amp in a car.  they use a 30 amp fuse, or higher, due to the high current draw, however, they use a huge battery cable also.

wires are rated in resistance.  to a certian point, a wire is simply a fuse.  a 18ga wire might only be rated to say 15 amps.  once you start drawing 20 or 25 amps (2 55W bulbs) the connections, and wires become vunerable to breaking.

in my case, reguardless of the fuse (mine didn't blow) the connection of the power source of my headlight gave way.  thats the blue/white wire at the starter button.

check your fuse, and i recomend 5amps above.  anything after that, you might want to think about using a relay and using the headlight signal as a switch for the relay.. (this is electrial talk, which would require a diagram, and some electrical background)

if i sound like a ass, or don't know what im talking about, i'll try and explain it another way.

    Hey 909,

no not at all... thanks for the info actually.

I did check the fuse and turns out it was blown. It's a 10A, and I don't have a spare 15A so Ill get one on tues and see if that one can handle the current.

    Re: F4i Dual Headlight Mod

as odd as it might sound.. great news the fuse blew.. if its a 10A.. the max you should do is 15A.

anything after that, your wiring turns into a fuse, and any contacts, any weak soilders will break, and leave you with headaches.

so, for future refference, if your headlights go out, and you have the dual mod, and your fuse is GOOD, look at the source connection in side the starter button switch.  thats where i had problems.

I found the problem and you were right man .. the connection was broken off.. these are the pics..

but instead of the blue and white wire.. it's the third one on the right and i cant tell what color it is...I have red/yellow, blue/white and unidentify wire.. these 3 are connected to the switch.. anyway, i solder it back and jump the headlights.. they're on but I still need the sockets.. I threw away my sockets last season when i did the dual mod, now I have to buy another set so i can plug them in.....stupid me ...

holy bagezzus those pics are huge..

anyways.. H4 universal sockets are cheap, and i doubt your average autopart stores, kragen, pepboys, autozone will have them, but a napa, or star autopart should.  anywhere that would have a machine shop, or stores that sell more parts than just oil and filters.

    Re: F4i Dual Headlight Mod

So did you guys end up going back to the old set up with the 1 bulb low beam? What would be the solution to avoiding these problems. I'm conisdering undertaking this project.

    Thanks

    Re: F4i Dual Headlight Mod

yeah, i went back to stock, obviously since i explained the issue with overloading the circuit, and showing the weak points.

some people might be getting away with it, but eventually, it will fail, and it will kill your headlights, and i hope to god it doens't happen at night like my situation.

if your really really interested in this mod, it still can be achived, but you must rewire the headlighting system with a relay, and use the headlight power simply as a signal switch.  the relay will provide full bulb load from the battery.

    Re: F4i Dual Headlight Mod

I did mine witht he whole relay thing, no problem ever since. And theres a HUGE difference when riding at night. My low beams are about as bright as my old high beams, and cover more surface area...and my high beams are just way up there. Great mod, I find.

    Re: F4i Dual Headlight Mod

I think I got a pretty good idea on how to do it, but do you have any pics of how you did? Or maybe some more instruction?

    Thanks

    Re: F4i Dual Headlight Mod

OK so I got my wires to do the mod and it looks like they are the oposite of what I actually need. I saw how it says no modification but these are wrong. Maybe Honda put the wrong ones in the bag? I guess I can cut it and solder the wire onto the other side of the spade so it fits. Why does this have to happen to me? Will update you guys on my progress.

    Re: F4i Dual Headlight Mod

so are you guys saying that instead of just replacing the bulbs, you need to replace the whole socket and wire in another relay?
