    Storing bike for a year

So Im probably looking for another deployment oversea's. But before I park my 97 CBR600 F3 in a garage what should I top off and what should I drain? Should I get a bike stand to prevent suspension from going bad? And in advance thank you for the responce.

Re: Storing bike for a year

A bike stand will still load the suspension, unless you get a sterring stem attachment for the front. It will help the tires a bit though. store the bike on stands out of sun light would be best. There  is not realy a good way to store long term  in a humid enviroment. Best for the bike would be to drain the tank and run till it shuts off, if you live in a dry climate, like Arizona or Co. but in a humid enviroment you can get condinsation inside the tank.  The ideal solution would be to leave it in the care of some one you could trust to periodicley take it out warm it up and go for a little ride around the block. But then that is another whole can of worms.

Additives will normaly only get you by for a couple of months (winter storage) if that. pump gas has so many thing in it now other than gasoline that it degrades fairly quickly.  So long term storage can be problematic. In the end it will be a judgment call, but hopfully this will give you some things to think about for when you do store it, to find the best way possible for you.

Gas check. I'll just run it dry and find a way to keep the keys in storage. I got people but they ride a different breed then me, cruisers. I've been found of ester oil and guess ill see if it makes some type of build up or partical breakdown.

She might not be a beuty but it's a pride I have gained in the bike. Just wish the best about her.

Re: Storing bike for a year

    emmhh ummehh(clear throat). . .

I live in Portland, am very trustworthy, need a ride to school, used to work at a Honda/Suzuki shop, do excellent maintenance/upkeep, am not hard on bikes(when not at the track), MISS RIDING, have a nice heated garage with an empty space, have owned/maintained many bikes(including a '97 F3), . . .
Did I mention very trust worthy?

I'm just dreaming, but would keep it nice and warm for you!!!!

Other than what hubbard wrote I would say to make sure you have antifreeze in the water if it will be stored in the cold. I used to run water/waterwetter alone.(no antifreeze when racing) You probably have that now, but it's the first thing to enter my mind.

A fuel stabilizer would be worth looking into, but I've never had to use one. It seems like they claim to keep gas for a long time. Make sure that stabilizer gets in the carbs by running the bike after filling the tank. A full tank with stabilizer will help keep water out better than an empty tank.(here in soggy Oregon)

Best thing is to ride it at least a few miles a month and maybe keep it on a battery tender.

    Where are you headed?

Some other things to consider: if possible, take off the chain and put it in a bag with some oil to keep the surface rust off. Also, if its stored in a humid area, you can take out the plugs and put a small ammount of oil in the cylinders to keep them from rusting and or seizing. Put a plug over the exhaust to keep pests from building nests in it (had that happen to me).

Where soldiers go, where else. If everything fails on me It'll be an interview process but Ill think of it kx250cbr600.

Hrmm never thought of the chain being a problem. It might be helpful as after I get back i'll be looking at some modifying it. But to my knowledge these chains have no slave so it'll need to be removed by the drive sprocket too?

Re: Storing bike for a year

Topping off the tank will keep moisture out. Nother words cut off the fuel valve and run her dry, top her off and go do your thing. Then drain and refill with fresh when you get home so you dont run possibley degraded gas thru. And I agree with every thing else. Also if pulling the chain is too complicated you can smear it in vasoline. that will seal out air and moisture. and it is petroleum based, so it will be safe and cleans off like regular grease...

One other thing, I would just like to take a minute to say thanks. And tell you and ALL of our other members that are serving  our country and protecting our freedoms, when sometimes the reasons are not always clear for where you go or what your told to do, just how thankfull we are for your decision to stand in harms way to protect our way of life. You are HERO'S in my book. Be safe, n come home that way.....

Re: Storing bike for a year

vasoline...never thought of that. its a good idea. yeah, the only reason i mentioned having to take off the chain and put it in a bag of oil is because it happened to me. when i got back from my deployment my chain was shot from rust. the bike was stored in NC in a noncontrolled envirnment, a good portion of my (previously a 95 yamaha fzr) bike contained rust...da** steel tube frame... thank god for aluminum! not to mention i had to replace all of the seals..

Re: Storing bike for a year

thank you guys for advise. The last thing ill want to do is replace things I don't need too. I've stripped my fairings and primered on the small rust spots normally around the welds. I guess now its just the waiting till i get my orders.
