Does anyone know if this swap would work going from an F4 to and F4i??

Yes it does, Ive done it to my F4 and it works perfectly. I dont have the diagram handy but, just find one for the F4 and F4i and match the wires up. Most of the wires end up being the same color, ie tach wire is yellow/? on the F4 and on the F4i gauges. You will have a few extra green wires that all just need to be grounded and a pink/yellow wire. Ground the pink/yellow one also and you wont use the white/blue that comes from the guages.
Get a F4i thermostat (complete with sensor), i got mine from ebay ~$35 in excellent condition. Get a NEW gasket for the thermostat ~$1 from my honda dealer. The stock F4 thermostat uses a 1 wire connection, the F4i uses a 3 wire connection but you only use 2 in the swap. The thermostats are a direct swap, so no issues there. This means to make it work run 1 wire from the gauges to the thermostat, so you have the 2 connections. Oh drain the coolant, before doing this or youll have quite a mess.
I also ran a wire from the gauges to the kick stand which I think was green/white.
Everything on the gauge will work, besides the FI light. Ill have the fairings off of my bike tonight (march 7th), so if you want any pic of anything let me know.

Also, I thought this was the coolest thing...... My bike is orange and black, the F4i gauges backlight is orange!

What kind of light are you in? Its very early in the morning for me, so excuse me if this is completely wrong; but im 99% sure my backlight only comes on at night or low light situations.

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

i tried setting the clock and also turning off the light on the garage. a few of the videos i have seen that show the guages going on with no backlight so i figure i am not alone on this one

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

I'm bringing this thread back from the dead....whats the latest on this swap, did everyone cure the flashing lights, back-light and temp problems...I did this swap back in 05 but never finished the bike...

i'm back now trying to get the bike going, finishing the f3/f4i plastics conversion...can someone point me a better thread or a more recent thread then this one....

    thanks

Im not sure why anyone is having problems but i did mine exactly off the tutorial on the first page along with using the 900rr temp sensor and everything works perfectly! I would say any of the problems lie in bad wiring or faulty equiptment in the first place.

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

Ditto on it working first try. I havent swapped in the 97-98 900rr temp sensor yet because its backordered... so it still reads 270 and flashes all the time. If you dont want it to flash, then unplug the wire to the sensor on the thermostat. Otherwise, works perfectly.

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

MANY thanks go to this thread.  I've been lurking this site for quite some time and had to join.  If nothing, just to say thanks!  I've got a 97 F3 and hooked the guages up just like it says and they work awesome the 1st time.  I thought about hooking the kickstand up to the FI light but now I'm not.  I ended up running it down the road unknowingly the kickstand connector was completely unhooked.  So I took the whole harness out and that cleaned it up a lot.  Anyway, am waiting for the 900rr sensor to come in.  Should be here tomorrow and I'll put it in this wekend.  I can't wait.

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

I'll be doing this in a week or 2. I just ordered a cheap ATX power supply extension. I'm gonna cut it in half and use it as a connector for everything. Figure squeeze some RTV silicone in the backside of the connector holes where the wires go into the plug. That should help keep out moisture.

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

finished a couple days ago. Everything went smoothly and everythihng works, excet the temp gauge... sensor is in the mail. Ended up finding a 14 pin male and female connector under the hood of a Sebring at the junkyard that worked great for a new harness plug.

Only question I have now is why is there a side stand signal going to the dash if there isnt an indicator?

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

I think it would be great to do this mod because my f3 gauges aren't in that great of shape.  Is there anywhere to get either the f3 or f4i gauges for a reasonable price?  Or would anyone like to sell their f3 set.  Sense y'all aren't using them anyway.

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

hi all, after reading this thread many a time i finely got my f4i guages in the mail, my only question is this.  other than a speedo healer has anybody come up with a sprocket set that will correct the issue of the trip and milage being off?  I have a stock f2 setup as far as sprockets go but was going to do a 520 conversion.  or is it possiable to just match the final drive ratio of an f4i?  thanks for the help.

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

I think the speedo sensor has to be swapped b/c the f2 is cable driven and f3+ is electronically driven.  The thread says a gsxr speedo sensor works.

I do have a ? about the sensor though, the gsxr sensor, does it mount to the front sprocket, or the shaft?  I'm not even 100% what 'the shaft' refers to, just seen it a few times in this thread.  Additionally, when people are stating 'thermostat' are you guys really meaning thermostat, or is the temperature sensor another piece that taps into the block?

To answer my own question, I believe this is what is being referred to.

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

yes the temp sensor is what we are switching, threads into the thermostat housing. (form the top)

as far as the speed sensor goes, i dono.  i swaped motors to a 98 f3 so i have the f3 electronic sensor.

here is the temp sensor that i got, seems tp work fine.

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

ok i have done the swap and hooked everything up except the wire running to the battery. now i understand that is for the clock but is that also for the trip and odometer? everytime i go out and put a few miles on it and then turn the bike off and back on teh odometer and trp read teh same as when i installed it. does that wire to the battery also keep this part up to date?
