Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

Ok, so I'm in need of some help with my swap!  I finished it last season and almost everything worked perfectly except for the 900rr temp sensor which I had to wait to ship.

I finally got it in but as I was installing it on the bike it sheared in half about halfway into the motor.  I used some easy outs to get the broken part out and stripped all the threads in the head and made the hole a little bigger.  I'm going to use some aluminum brazing rods to patch the hole, but after I'm going to need to drill and tap the hole for the temp sensor.

Where do I find what tap to get for this job?  I figure I'm going to have to start from scratch so I can retap for an F4i sensor or a 900rr sensor...just depends on what I find in my area for sale first.  Can anyone here help me out with what kind of tap I'll need?

    Thanks!!!!!!!

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

Okay guys, brain picking time. I just did the swap as detailed, even swaping in the 99 900rr thermo unit while i had the tank off to run the wire from the cluster to the battery.

Here is what happens now that I have it all wired up and everything. The clock works. Well, it is on. I can't seem to set it. And nothing else works. If i disconnect the new battery wire, and then touch it to the battery, the tach will sweep once, and after that, nothing. Any ideas which wire(s) I need to triple check?

    UPDATE:
Just pulled the whole thing back appart, twisted the right wires together, taped it up, and tried it again. All the connections are good, and all the connections are correct, as per tutorial. I think my F4i cluster is just borked. :( Oh well, I'll just order another one this friday (payday).

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

I just did this swap 10 mins ago and after about an hour of trying, I finally discovered how to use the 'FI' bulb as the kickstand indicator!! To add, it is also functional in that if you put the kickstand down in gear, it stalls!

I will post this on every forum in which I have researched and read about this swap! I had yet to find the answer that I was looking for and so I want to share my finding with everyone.

    f3's yellow/black wire connects to f4i's white/blue wire AND NOT it's green/white wire.

I couldn't have the signal all the way to the right on because I had the left one on :P

--CBRF23: add this onto the list in the first post if you find this to be worthy !!

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

I had two wires hit while doing the wiring, cause a short, blowwing every fuse on the stupid bike. Except for the fact that there was no fuse on the new power wire. I replaced the fuses once everything was wired up, and it all works now. Now to try to get the kick stand wired into the fi light...

I need to know the same thing. Mine broke off getting it out. so I drilled it out to just before the threads start showing. now I need the tap to clean out the threads. what size tap do i need is it?

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

my old temp sensor broke off in the head
the size tap you need is  1/8" BSPT with 28 thread pitch. which I cant find locally anywhere.   I ended up getting one off ebay for ten bucks. Here
Thats the tap I used and it worked for me. It was my best guess for the tap size with research dont hold me accountable if it doesnt work for you. I also used some sealer in the threads of the sensor

Re: F3 to F4I Gauge Swap

i am in the middle of this project.. im taking way longer than expect though.. i decided to get a little creative on the brace. well i cut the face part of the old gauges. in that place i have cut a peice of lexan (plexiglas) that i have cut the circles and rectangles of the f4i gauge into.. and have fitted that lexan tothe black backing of the old f3 gauge. its a bit difficult to explian to i have supplied pictures..
i have frosted the lexan so that i can put any color L.E.D's behind it so that it glows that color.. pretty neat if you ask  me. please judge.. whether you like it or not some input would help out alot..

*update*  i dropped this thing and the plexi broke.. so im making one similar but with less of the flaws you see here

just an example of the glowing.. not the finished product though..
