that really looks amazing, was that the f4i subframe? and if so, how hard was it to mount it to the frame?

    Re: F4i race tail

No, it was way easier than that.  I just used the original F1 subframe with no welding or major fabrication.  I had to cut the old seat in half and reappoulstered it (costing me a whole $3.50).  The front mounts for the tail uses the battery case bolts and for the back high mounts I just took some aluminium metal and bent it around a bit to make it use an original hole on the subframe.  And that's it, or course I still need to clean things up a bit but it's as easy as that.  Total price:

    Fiberglass tail: $130

    Vinyl: $3.50

    Tail lights: $8

Not bad for a poor college student.  If you want any more pictures I can get some this weekend...just let me know.

damn, that looks bitchen. weird how much a tail changes the look of a bike. Id love some more pictures. maybe some of the subframe and the underside of your seat to fully understand how you did it. nice job.

    Re: F4i race tail

This weekend I'll take off the tail and show you what it all looks like...but beware, it is not pretty.  I already ordered the upper and lower F4i front farring which should be here sometime late next week which is my next project.  I'll make sure to keep you guys posted.

    Re: F4i race tail

Wow, that looks awesome!  I want to do that with mine too!

Mind if I ask where you ordered the tail piece from?

I look forward to the pics of the subframe.  I think it'll help me visualize what I need to do with mine.  I don't really care if my subframe doesn't look nice under the seat--who's gonna see it anyway? Stick out tongue [:P]

Thanks for sharing the pics and knowledge! Big Smile [:D]

    Re: F4i race tail

I ordered the tail piece through Chaparral Motorsports http://www.chaparral-racing.com/ part number L224-5003.  From start to finish it only took me about 5 hours one night and if I can do it...anyone can.  Good luck, and here's one more picture.

    Re: F4i race tail

So here are all the pictures that I promised.  Most of them are pretty self explanitory but if you guys have any furthur questions...just ask away.

The first two pictures show the seat and how it was cut to fit.

These are the front mounting holes we used:

Here are the high rear mounting positions:

The last three pictures just show the aluminum bracket that was fabricated using nothing for than a hammar, drill, and grinder.

    Re: F4i race tail

    Thanks for the pics!!

You make it sound easy enough that I might attempt to do this!  I've never done anything to my bike (well, except fixing my fairings, mirror, change oil, clean/lube chains), so I was iffy about putting on a new tail.  Maybe I'll go to the scrap metal yard and find something I can bend into a bracket...I'm feeling brave...

Is it weird to have the rear brake fluid container exposed (outside the tail piece)?
