    Now I have 2...

After finding out the bad news that my '87 Hurricane 1000 will need an acg chain replaced, I stumbled on a mint '88, Red/Shadow Blue Hurricane. The owner drove 500 miles to meet me half way at (couldn't have been more fitting) than the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum / AMA headquarters out in Ohio.

I will attempt to fix the '87 over the winter. I've rebuilt car engines, so I'm going to give it a shot. Hate to break the bike for parts, it's too nice.  Honda wanted ~ $3000 to do the entire job (1/3 was parts). They really didn't even want to do it. But what have I got to lose?

    Re: Now I have 2...

That's how Honda listed the part on my estimate. Not really a timing chain. I believe there are 2 chains in the motor. The cam chain, in the top end, not really a big job, this is what I *thought* was making the noise. The acg chain, in the bottom end, connects the crankshaft to the (ac) generator, hence the name...I guess.

Motor has to come off, case split, total teardown. Honda estimated the parts to be around $900, but I'm going to check everything when it's apart.

I thought about parting the bike, but it's in really nice shape, hate to have it become one of those list of parts you see on eb@y ;) , they're nice, rare bikes.  How much $$$ could I  recoup by parting, ya know? I bought it for $2600, the guy I bought from says he heard the noise, but didn't think it was bad. It's still fast as hell, but I won't ride it as I'm afraid the chain will let go, and really damage the motor,  or worse. So I figure if I have to spend $1000 to fix it, maybe I could sell for $2500, netting me $1500. Could I total $1500 in parts if I just broke it up?  Don't know. Plastics are perfect, tires new.
