600RR fork conversion nightmare
To all who plan on doing a 600rr fork swap onto their F4i...DO yourself a favor, and get the complete rolling front assy.( from the ignition to wheel, including the rotors.) So far this is what is not compatible between the bikes
-Ignition lock on the triple tree...the F4i unit will not bolt up to the 6oorr without hitting the headstock. I havent checked to see if someone can re-tumble the 600rr lock to match the original gas cap, and rear lock yet. (
-600rr rotors will not bolt onto the F4i rim, (bolt pattern is different)and the F4i rotors are smaller.(the brake pads only seat against half of the rotor.) so you need the rr rim.
-The front axle is also different. I had made a front axle @ work, only to realise that the rotors were too small on the F4i as stated above. This does not matter since you need the rr rim anyways.
So if anyone has a front rim for a 03-04 RR for sale, let me know, I also need the ignition lock too.
Thanks Jeff

Re: 600RR fork conversion nightmare
Here's an update........
The turning radius with the RR triple tree is nil. You need to machine the bottom triple so that the turning radius from lock to lock is increased.
The clip-ons hit the ram air duct cover, as well as the starter button. the top tripple tree has to be machined as well as the clip-ons.. you have to rotate the starter/throttle assy, which means drilling a new locating hole.( I'm sure the horn/turning assy is the same, I just haven't got that far yet. I'll post more as I go

Re: 600RR fork conversion nightmare
I was looking at the 6oorr conversion, but I was thinking of using Helibars instead of the RR's clipons so the F4i ergos were retained. This may alleviate all the control issues you are having.
Is it the steering stops that are preventing the tree from turning far enough?

Re: 600RR fork conversion nightmare
Yes the steering stops are what has to be machined. ( as well as the underside of the top triple tree, and the top of the clip-ons) I don't want to put the heli bars on because I wanted the 600rr bars to begin with. I already had the 929 clip-ons mounted to the F4i forks. The issues with the 600rr front end are fixable, this post is merely for informing someone who thinks they can just bolt on a 600rr front end to their F4i and go riding, well this is not the case.

Re: 600RR fork conversion nightmare
I am interested to know how it rides when you are done. That is the only thing preventing me from going that route.
I know the USD 600rr forks are stiffer and they had to re-engineer the chassis when they did the update. I would hate to go to all the trouble and find out that the loss of flex adversly affects the suspension when you are leaned over.

You can make an adaptor plate, if you can deal with not being able to lock the trees.
-600rr rotors will not bolt onto the F4i rim, (bolt pattern is different)and the F4i rotors are smaller.(the brake pads only seat against half of the rotor.) so you need the rr rim.
I am using 929 rotors, they bolt right on to the F4i wheel, but are larger @330mm, so you will need to scae the calipers 'up' by making some small spacers from stainless or aluminum. Incredible stopping power!
-The front axle is also different. I had made a front axle @ work, only to realise that the rotors were too small on the F4i as stated above. This does not matter since you need the rr rim anyways.
Use the 600RR axle, and swap the bearings in the F4i wheel to suit.
So if anyone has a front rim for a 03-04 RR for sale, let me know, I also need the ignition lock too.
Thanks Jeff
You can grind the stops off the lower triple, and drill and tap new holes wher eyou wnat the stops to be, then use some machine screws as stops.
As far as the bars go, you can mod a pair of aftermarket clip ons to clear everything, or get rid of the intake covers...
Good luck, and post pics!!

Re: 600RR fork conversion nightmare
I Finally got my 600rr rim today. That's not bad eh? I paid for it on July 15, got it Aug 24.( I had to file a complaint on Ebay. Anyways, I'll be fitting the 600rr front end on this weekend, I'll try to get some pic's and post them. (I still need a ignition lock, I'm not going to do the 5 week Ebay thing again!) I'll keep everyone posted

Re: 600RR fork conversion nightmare
Here's the latest update...
600rr clip-ons will not work! You can't reinstall the ram air duct covers whatsoever. The clip-ons hit the actual ram air duct itself( the starter button hits, and even if you drill a new hole in the clip-on and try to rotate the throttle/starter/on-off switch, the front brake lever hits the front fairing, turning the opposite direction)
The 929 clip-ons do work and allow you to reinstall the ram air duct covers, but you'll have to machine spacers to go in between the clip-on's and the fork tubes.
The 600rr master cyl will not work(it might when mounted to the 929 clip-ons, I only tried it with the 600rr clip-ons) but it to also hit the tach face on the gauge cluster. I used the 929 master, and the F4i throttle assy.
Either the 600rr/F4i clutch lever will work( I personally like the feel of the 600rr lever better)
The forks will not turn from lock to lock even after removing material from the lower triple clamp. The pinch bolts that tighten the lower triple clamp to the forks,..Well the bolts hit the frame. There's not much loss of a turn radius( when turning the bars), But it doesn't turn as far from left to right, so be aware of this.
I installed the RR calipers with my braded lines off the F4i
I have ridden the bike briefly, after installing the forks. I couldn't go far as I didn't get a ignition lock yet, and having your ignition duct taped to your upper clamp has "PULL ME OVER" written all over it. It did seem better, but it's not a great comparrison yet. I'll keep you posted with pics

Re: 600RR fork conversion nightmare
Nice to hear it's coming along Jeff, for the clip-ons, I had bought a pair of 929 units also, and found out they were too big(the 600RR has an oddball fork diameter), so my solution was to get a set of racing clip-ons, and weld in extensions, kinda like homemade Heli bars.
I haven't gotten around the ignition yet, but I don't ride the CBR far enough from home to really needit either.
How about posting some pix?

Re: 600RR fork conversion nightmare
Well It's finally finished! What a job! Forget about purchasing a 600rr ignition, it's the same as the F4i. It has to be modified extensively as well as the underside of the top triple clamp. It looks factory, once it's finished. The horn switch has to be used from the F4i also. The RR doesn't have a separated wiring for the horn. (it's located in the main wiring harness) Also the horn has to be mounted to the bottom front fairing stay bolt( and the bracket for the horn has to be modified also)

To tell you the truth, I haven't had a chance to ride it yet. LOL I hope this will change tomorrow.
