I'm a new rider here in SD.. I was wondering where are the great roads to practice turning and letting the bike loose.. Still not comfortable on freeways.. just got my license 2 weeks ago.

actually id like to kno the answer to this one too.... been in SD for over 1 1/2 years and all i kno about is Palomar Mt. 

btw esco, Palomar is about 45min north and its a great road, except that the locals tend to put gravel, rocks, and even oil down on the road to keep bikers away.  the traffic doesnt help either.

 I was at Simivalley last weekend and the roads over there are great... not sure how to get around because my friend was the one who led the way.. I couldn't really do much because I'm new to riding.. but man it was a great ride.. oh yeah.. roads were clean.. except for burnout marks..

There are a lot of great country roads to take, a couple up to Ramona, a couple in Ramona, a few up here in North County between Escondido and Julian.  The overall quality of the roads is pretty good, of course because they are country roads, there are going to be some places with a little gravel spot or a little wet in the shade.  You just don't give it 100% and ride to your skill level.  It's still a great place to learn to move around on the bike and pitch it in and there isn't much traffic to deal with.  (have to pass probably 6 cars in a 2 hour ride)

The only place you are going to find those perfectly maintained roads are going to be high traffic, which you can't go fast on and aren't good for learning.  That or the track.

check out the path to borrego springs...both sides has great roads leading to it and coming back from it...79...76...S2...

my favorites by far are banner grade and montezuma pass (monty has the absolute best pavement ever). very nice roads....

but if you're a noob, i would not recommend them...

Where exactly do you live?  I know a bunch of roads here.  However if you are still not comfortable on the highway then you will definately *** your pants on these roads unless you go below speed limit.
When I just got my license I started practicing turns in new neighborhoods where they didnt have that many people yet and the roads were wide and brand new.  Then I went into the twisties.
By the way, do you own a brand new RR as your first bike?

wassup fulcrum.. I live at serra mesa.. just above mission valley.  I've been riding the freeways lately, I'm kinda getting comfy on it as long as there's no high winds..

as far as my first bike.. yes this is my very first bike, but I started learning how to ride from my friends 99 R1.. I probably put about 200 miles on it then decided to buy my own..

Sucks that you live in the middle of a city.  I think the best learning twisting are off el camino real south of Del Mar.  The spiderweb of roads go through the hills, lake, go to the ocean. Then  there's telegraph avenue and sunrise highway.  All have good pavement, low traffic, and dont put too much stress on the rider.  My favorite is Sunrise highway, the turns are more sweeping so you can go ~70-75 at the bottom and faster towards the top, really beautifull, but its takes 40 mins of driving just to get there.  Palomar is sweet with really tight turns but you should really wait till you have good experience since it IS very demanding and you can easily go down there or even worse - take people with you.

Thanks for the info I really appreciate it.  Anyway, I know about palomar... I actually took my car up there once when we visited Temecula.. I don't think I'm ready for something like that.. also, the ride was kinda far from the house.  Anyway, I looked up el camino on google map, it seems close.. I'll probably take my car too to check it out.  I couldn't find sunrise highway and telegraph avenue.  Are you talking about Telegraph Cyn?  Well anyway, if you don't mind.. can you post the directions to Sunrise Highway and Telegraph Avenue?

El Camino Area:  take 5 North and exit Via de la Valle.  Turn right on Via de la Valle.  It leads into the hills and has many smaller roads sprouting from it.  Hard part is that there're too many choices. Some are reaally nice some are ok, but once you spend a few hours there you should develop a sense of direction.  I once got so carried away that ended up in Oceanside. You will not drag a knee there but because there's no traffic, the road is narrow, foresty area, and of constant twists it is fun.

Sunrise highway:  just get to 8 and head east.  If you look on google maps Sunrise will be going north from I-8 a couple of miles after 79, right after the town of Pine Valley.  Sunrise goes North to Julian. For me it takes 40 minutes just to get to it, but it is always well worth it.  You can also take 78 to Julian and come down South on Sunrise but lately 78 had annoying traffic, and I really enjoy riding uphill on Sunrise far better.  Dress warm!

Telegraph:  eh, yeah it might be Telegraph Canyon.  You just take 805 south till you hit it and head east.

Fulcrum.. good lookin out man.. maybe one day we can hit up these routes.. I'll try to go to El camino area tomorrow with a couple of buddies to check it out.

Yeah, let me know how it went.  THe important part is to make the right turns on those hills or you may end up on boring roads.
