    Radar Detector

I have always wondered if having a radar detector would make a PO more likely to give you a ticket, if you were stopped for ANY traffic violation, not just speeding.  any oppinions??

In some areas just having one is a ticket.  I am sure that if you get pulled over by as highway guy or a State trooper they would not appreciate you owning one.  Me I don't care, I don't write speeding tickets

If I pull you over for speeding and you have a radar dector, you're getting a ticket.  If you don't have it you may get a warning.

    Re: Radar Detector

A couple years ago. I had a radar detector in my truck, I met a state patrol on a back road. I was doing 74 in a 55. I pulled over right away and I pulled the radar detector off of the windshield andstuck it under the seat. It was also dark outside when this happened. The officer came to the window and asked why I was going so fast. I told him that I was in a hurry to get my girlfriend home because her mom was pissed and we got stuck in the carwash--true story--The officer told me to slow down, he said "women, you can't live with them and you can't kill them either" I thought this was kind of interesting and funny at the same time. Any way the officer stated that If I did not have the radar detector he would have given me a warning. but instead he gave me a ticket for $171.00. I was not too mad because he was a real nice guy, and I was speeding so I deserved a ticket.  He said that he has something come back on his radar gun that will say if you have a radar detector. Just my story.

Good Story. but is it true that they can find out that you have a radar detector?

    Re: Radar Detector

Just take your ticket and call it your motorcycle tax.  There is a reason there are speed limits, so expect to pay if you break them.  Oh, and there are plenty of other bonehead violations that I would write you a ticket for besides speeding.  If you're speeding in something other than a motorcycle, just try not to hit us other motorcyclists.

Long answer short.. Yes. I have a "VG2" detector in my police car and it will notify me if a vehicle has a Radar Detector or not.

    Re: Radar Detector

What if said radar detector has a VG2 Stealth Mode? Will it still be detected by the officer?

    Re: Radar Detector

The only two states where it's illegal to have a radar detector are Virginia and D.C.  Some radar detectors also are VG2 stealth and cannot be detected by radar detectors, however, there are Spectre radar detector detector that can detect pretty much anything except the Bell STi.

btw, how often to Police Officers have radar detector dectectors?

    Re: Radar Detector

I thought only radar JAMMERS were illegal, not detectors.  Detectors don't work anyway.

    Re: Radar Detector

Radar DETECTORS are illegal in D.C. and Virginia, Radar JAMMERS are illegal everyone, Laser SHIFTERS are legal nearly everywhere.  Do any of them work, YES.  I have a BMW M3 with Escort Radar / Laser detector and Escort Laser shifter.  It works great.  I don't normally drive around speeding my ass off, but my car is a cop magnet so I have them.  Laser shifters work by detecting lasers then sending a laser responses back to the Laser/Lidar system cops use.  It sends a signal saying that the target (me) is going 99 mphs, then alternates to 1 mph.  This signal is continuous and confuses the Laser/Lidar system allowing you more response time to slow down.

In most cases, if you have a laser / radar detector and a cop is targetting you with laser, the detector will only tell you that you are caught.  Lasers send a signal that is much more concentrated and only about 18" wide.  A cop has to directly point at a target to determine it's speed and once he does that, you're caught.  With radar, there is a broad signal that bounces off EVERYTHING.  A cop has to point the radar in a general direction and then determine which vehicle the radar is picking up as speeding.  A copy pointing a radar at the cars in front of you can be picked up by a radar detector and warn you of the speed trap.
