Re: QuickShift.....Isle of Man
I live in London-about 10 miles from Tower Bridge. What do you need to know about the IoM-I presume you are going for the TT races? I've been several times recently so I have fairly current info

Quick, This is good to know that your a return customer to the races. I need info for looking into rooms, best places to watch what are some of the events that take place, and anything you could to tell us to look out for.

Re: QuickShift.....Isle of Man
It really depends on your budget & the length of your stay. Camping is available behind the Grandstand & there are a plethora of hotels in Douglas (of varying quality & price).
Depending on how many of you going, you might find it more cost effective to rent a property rather than spend the $$ with a hotel. These can be booked through the IoM tourist board website as can hotels.
I've always stayed in Douglas as there is always something going on in the eveing & on non race days you can go & explore the rest of the Island/ wander up to the merchandise stalls & pits behind the Grandstand. You also have the famous Busheys beer tent too & this usuall elicits some squid st8inting which the cops deal with , with a smile on their face & a descreet word
You need to do the touristy stuff like visit the Laxey wheel, take the mountain train, visit the museum and of course visit the 26th milestone (also known as Joey's -after Joey Dunlop.)
On non race days, there are evnets organised that take you across the Island- drag races where you can 'run down the strip on your bike' or just watch them do it. Peel beach races are supposed to be good fun but I've never made it yet!
Alternatively, you can just get in another lap or two & marvel at how big a set of balls these racers have to ride through the streets at the speeds they do!
I'd suggest you rent a car & nominate a designated driver as cab fares can be expensive if travelling any distance.
One thing I would definately do is book a seat in the Grandstand for the Senior TT-it is not expensive and will really add to the memories for the trip.
Drop me a PM with your IM or email addy & I'll give you some more info without taking up more forum space.

Re: QuickShift.....Isle of Man
Quick, Sounds like a great time, budget isn't an issue and hotels are a must. I believe we will trailer our bikes to either the UK side or just before we cross and then ride the bikes from there. We like to trailer just in case we have an accident, or something goes wrong with one of the bikes. We will also stay for the whole event its 7 days correct? I have free calling to the UK so when we do decide to start booking it shouldn't be an issue. For a week or so there in the UK about how much do you think it will cost the wife and I, would 1500 pounds be good or should I plan for more. Maybe we can get a few more people here on the forums to join in with us. Maybe the Admin (Mario) can take some time away from work and join us...hint hint.

Re: QuickShift.....Isle of Man
Good to know you will be taking bikes. If you have the option take a van & do not trailer-where do you plan on leaving the trailer? If you take the van option, you can pay for the Van & driver & have your passnger go on as a foot passenger-should save you bundles. The Steam Packet Ferry Company is the only ferry service that operates to the IoM & they are known as the 'Cost a Packet Ferry co. for good reason during this time
You need to book the ferry crossing first to determine how long you need to book the hotel for. Some will only do a 10 day deal over the TT fortnight. You need to be booking the ferry now as reservations for '08 will have been made as they left this year. The actual racing is over a week and there is practice week beforehand. If your schedule allows, & they are still going, take in the Steam Packet races on the Sat/Sun of the last w/end. It 's on a 3 mile road course & has a real relaxed atmosphere-the pits are a field opposte the main straight & I wandered round & literally bumped into Joey Dunlop the last year he was there!
As for watching the main races, you need to decide where you are going to watch & get there early. Quarterbridge is good & the Church sets out seats & charges a modest admission fee & usually runs a refreshment stall too. Glen Helen is very popular & fills quickly . Other good spectator points have permanent bleachers & charge a small admission fee. However, you don't need to do this- I pulled over into a field entrance as we could not get in at Glen Helen & watched the races from there. A word of warning-don't get caught out & stop at Black Hut on the mountain. Got caught there during one of the practice sessions & had leathers & a T shirt on under the leather jacket; the wind got up & I just about froze as we were stuck there for about 2.5 hrs!
£1500 should cover everything for two of you easily-I'd pack the plastic just in case
Bike shops surprisingly are hard to locate but the Douglas Honda dealership was pretty helpful, although parts will take an extra two days due to the location.
Hope this helps-drop me a line if you need anymore info.
