It depends on what your technical skills are at. I have just started my first project like this about 2 weeks ago, but I have always been into taking things apart and putting them back together. So it has been fairly easy for me. I also took an auto shop class 2 years ago during my sophomore year of high school. and it has been very helpful with understanding engines.
What you would have to do is remove just about everything from the bike that covers the top of the engine. I.E. The fairings, radiator, carbs. etc. And then remove the cylinder head cover. it will look something like this...

Clymer or
Haynes repair manual. The manuals will give you step buy step instructions on what you should do and they probably also have a tutorial on exactly what to do when there is a problem like yours. They would probably be more of a help than I am. I'm still waiting to get mine.
