advice on repairing a dropped bike

not sure i am in the right section, but i have a 04 f4i that i dropped that i need to repair.  The bike needs a right side fairing and a front upper in addition to a crank cover?(alternator cover?) the casing that extends outward from the lower fairing on the right side.  I also need a new throttle mech/cable/ect and the typical pegs/mirror/sliders from the right side.

i probably should have searched a bit, but i am looking for info on Vendors to purchase from , Shops in the OC cali area, and advice on what route to take.

the biggest factor is that the bike had a custom paint job, a fakemeout repsol paint job that actually looked incredible for a non OE.  I am unfamiliar to what it would cost to repaint a new or used fairing to custom match vs just buying "take offs" but i will probably keep the tank the same(which is orange and will not match factory take offs)

are fiberglass fairings acceptable or should i stick with OE plastics, i am not too worried about resell value since i kinda already ruined that as a result from the accident, but i do want a cost effective quality solution that can allow me to do some of the work myself without having troubles with fitment, ect.

if anyone can reccomend a cost effective way for a DIY excluding paint, let me know please.  Or if their are any OC local that can do a respray(simple 2 tone)  let me know and maybe i will just buy a new complete set and sell the existing peices on ebay.

it sounds like a rebuild.why dont you go through your insurance?
or did you not get collision?
Youll be spending alotta coin to get all that done, paint and new fairings set are quite pricey.

Re: advice on repairing a dropped bike

no ins.  go figure, io guess i had it coming, kinda put the cart before the horse, week one bought bike and helmet and gloves, week two got jacket, same afternoon wrecked bike.  i was ballin on a budget and was waiting for a paycheck to get insurance.

i want to do the "bolt on pieces" myself, its what to do about the fairing that i am unsure of.  Im curius on faibergalss vs plastic, and the labor cost on repraying a used fairing vs a new, and aslo the additonal cost in a custom resprat vs a standard 1 or 2 color scheme.

oh *** man. You might be looking at a couple Gee's then, at least.
Isnt it illegal to ride without insurance... what happened to the car that you hit, or did you not hit anything but the ground.

if i can keep it under $1500 i will be happy, but i will have to bargain hunt for it. i may go buy the throttle mechanism and alternator cover today and try an install this weekend to get it running.  no lic and ins its all sorts of illegal, however in CA i didnt have to appear in court, go figure.  the biggest thing that pissed me off is that my bike did infact slide into a car, a 66 mustang nontheless, but i did get his info eventually and call and oppoligized, luckily it didnt bang it uo to bad mainly just the fron luower apron, his insurance covered everything and ofcoarse is billing me for the repairs.

Learn to fiberglass and fix the fairings. I've done it now on a couple of different bikes for myself and others. Most of the time will be the finish work and since it was a custom paint job you will save in not buying fairings for it just to repaint. As for the fiberglass fairings most of the are way to thing and unless you pay the bucks out will not match up with stock ones. As for other OEM parts try www.ronayers.com the shipping is cheap and so are the parts.

    Good luck

Re: advice on repairing a dropped bike

cool, i forgot that fiberglass could be used to repair plastics, duh!,  the damage isnt too bad, most two cracks in the upper and a fist size whole that grinded though the whole fairing.

i bought the bnike from parts411 and had a pretty good experience, i think im just gonna get it running with the parts i ordered(crank cover and throttle) and let them do the rest.  i have done a little fiberglass work on boats, but i dont think i could do a fairing and have it come out clean, so i will leave that to the experts.

yeah, now that i know you can fiberglass repair plastic fairings, i think repairing me existing upper and lower is the cost effective way to go.  The shop that did the paintwork quoted me $320 per fairing to repaint in custom match repsol paint scheme, not sure if this is on the high side, but their work is exeptionally good and i dont want to chance it with someone else.
