Cornering and not feeling right
Ok im getting back into riding after a couple years and my previous bike wasnt really made to hit corners... My question is now im riding a 2006 F4I with a 2 bros exhaust everything else is stock.. now when hitting the corners hard at a nice lean angle I tend to feel like my front wheel wants to slide ...Im leaning into the corners like everybody else im riding with and it just doesnt feel right maybe the tires who knows...the tires are what came on it from the factory ( Battleaxes ) any info would be great

Re: Cornering and not feeling right
i ride the same bike as you and i feel the same way. i doubt it would be the bike, many people ride the f4i like crazy, i think we just need to get over our fears... not sure though, i am trying to cut corners very slowly as i do not want to bite it.
sure hope we get some good feedback on this one.

Re: Cornering and not feeling right
3 main contributors to that problem... crappy tires, throttle control, and suspension. for throttle control, if u arent atleast steady on the throttle or accelerating out of the turn right at the apex... then you are weighting the front end too much. this could easy cause the front to slide. this problem would be slightly alleviated if your suspension is correctly set for your weight. less weight would transfer forward and the bike would track better, but ya. start w/ the tutorial in the FAQ section and set your sag at the very least. then, learn to slow down before the turn and accelerate out of it... not slowing down through the whole thing. lastly, get new tires.

Re: Cornering and not feeling right
i probably have my suspension all jacked up. its amazing, two service centers i have asked for "proper" suspension setup and they just gave it a few twists and done. not once did they ask me to sit on the bike while they worked on it.
i guess these are things i need to learn on my own since they just dont have the patience to do a good job on something this important!
as for new tires, i will get them when i NEED them ! im 7k miles into this f4i so the tires will need replacement sooner then i would actually like.

Re: Cornering and not feeling right
Wow, you've made it 7,000 miles on your factory tires? I'm already on my second rear tire thanks to a nail this spring.
I haven't touched my suspension yet. I'm still waiting to get a couple of buddys together to help me set sag. I've been very comfortable with the factory settings. I weigh about 175 if your wondering.
I've always thought the f4i feels very planted and stable in the corners, no front end push here.

Re: Cornering and not feeling right
ive not really ridden the bike the way it was designed to be ridden, i only commute, i bought the bike for fun, but it has now become my main commute vehicle. it is obviously not the best bike for commute, but it gets the job done and a few planned modifications should make it much more commute friendly.
like i said, my tires are getting flat and will need replacement soon. how much is normal milage out of a stock set of tires? cars go on for ever, i didnt think bikes would need tire replacement this often...

Re: Cornering and not feeling right
7k out of a set of Battlaxes sounds about right. ive gotten 7k out of a set of Pilot Powers, which are more high performance and not made to last as long as the stock F4i tires. cars go on forever because they simply have more rubber and the amount of grip needed for the size of the contact patch isnt as great, so the rubber is also harder. cars dont need sticky rubber to keep from falling over obviously, ha.
commuting on a bike is great IMO... saves u time and gas. last year my commute was about 15miles, and id hate to make that in my gas-guzzling Mustang through traffic. but ya, u can def look into some good sport touring tires that will give u good mileage. supposedly the new Pilot Road 2s are constructed similiar to the Pilot Powers 2CTs in that they have soft rubber on the shoulder for good grip, and harder rubber in the center for better mileage. i havent seen them for sale in the US yet, but u might want to look into it.

Re: Cornering and not feeling right
I have adjusted the suspension some but not to that extent... Im entering the corners the same everytime and throttle out at the same time.. It does it at extreme lean angles, but to me they are not that extreme due to myself being no where near an extreme lean angle as other riders in front of me pulling away in the corners...maybe its just something in my head that says enough is enough so lay off...but if thats it then forget what my head is telling me and just do it.....

lean angle is a function of speed (and turning radius), not the other way around.. ie, the faster u go, the farther u lean.
other problem... "maybe its just something in my head that says enough is enough so lay off..." drastically letting off the throttle mid-corner will cause the problem u described. this unsettles the chassis and could cause both the front end to slide and the rear to wiggle around a bit. constant throttle the entire time will help u to corner smoother.
dont be put off just cuz u cant keep up w/ other riders. forcing the situation and your speed is just a good way to hurt you, your bike, and maybe others.

now that you mention it I do tend to let up slightly in corners due to feeling like im drifting out and just trying to keep in tighter in the corner... And Trust me I will not ride outside my ability I do let others go and they wait or im right up there with them... not worth the chance of banging up that beautiful blue plastic...lol... thanks for the input and now since ive got some new tires ( Pilot Powers) we shall see...

Re: Cornering and not feeling right
f4i064life:
i realised after the great comments above that i am doing the same thing, im slowing down as i take the turn...
today i played a little bit with throttle and it does seem that at the very least keeping the throttle constant through the turn will help with the feeling of "oh *** my front is not holding on".
i will keep playing with this until it feels right. i think a few days on a track could be very beneficial to my riding.

Yes Actually I have taken the advanced riders course... I went out last night and hit the twisties, It seems that when im staying consistant with the throttle instead of letting up everything stays planted....Im going to be heading to the track since its been a while so maybe ill iron this one out..

no, i have not taken the MSF course, anything i have learned, i learned on my own. i dont ride twisties or anything, so i never got to practice cornering, only commute. but now i moved to a new home and we have about 2 miles of twisties before hitting the freeway. i learn, because i need to learn. no offense taken.
