Sun Oct 7th - Palomar, Julian, Ocotillo, Sunrise Highway and back

Sorry for the late notice everyone, most of you got txt messages already... we just got back from a Palmoar ride today. We are going out again tomorrow,  Sunday Oct 7th.

I will be at the Rancho Sante Fe Rd/ San Marcos Blvd Starbucks from 9-9:30am in San Marcos. The plan is to gas up in Escondiodo, run up Palomar and have breakfast at Mothers Kitchen around (11-12pm). From there run by Lake Henshaw and to Julian and Gas up. Due to such good weather in the desert, we are running the Great Southern Overland Route of 1879 from Julian to Ocotillo (not Ocotillo Wells, 1-2pm, gas up) and in to Pine Valley for Lunch. From there its the Sunrise Highway back to Julian and through Ramona back to Escondido around 5-6pm). See you there or on the way if you can make it.

Yes, join in. I would say we will be intermediate group this trip as some of the more casual riders have dropped off. Palomar will be quick as usual but most the other adjoining roads may be more tame. The pace will be a little quicker out in the desert where there arent any other people, a little slower around traffic. We are pretty respectful and usually wait for traffic to curb turnouts before passing... there are exceptions though for some disrespectful drivers. I know its late notice, so meet up at mothers kitchen might be easier. We usually take a while up there looking at the various bikes. I'm easy to find with the flat black F4i on an F2 chassis, will also have a camera mount on the tank but wont be filming much (have one spot I want to test this setup)

We will also have short range two way radio, will be on channel 8.

What a great ride! For anyone who hasn't run the Great Southern Overland Route of 1879 from Julian to Shelter Valley to Ocotillo - its a great road filled with suprises!!! It is 110 miles from Julian to Pine Valley so start with a full tank as there is no gas in between! The desert temps were non existant - absolutely perfect weather. Sunrise Highway however, froze my @$#%# off!!!!

SoCal I've noticed a few threads here that you've posted about group rides in the Escondido/San Diego area.  I'm a brand new rider, with a brand new CBR 600RR (just over a hundred miles, as I'm waiting to take my base safety course before I start riding in to work).  How tough is it for a newbie to get in on these group rides around here?   I've live in North Escondido BTW.

Re: Sun Oct 7th - Palomar, Julian, Ocotillo, Sunrise Highway and back

Weekend rides through palomar have been pretty rare since the Police have been real high profile the last few weeks. They're nabbing people for every little infraction they can; moving violations and non-DOT mods to a bike. Most people I know are staying away from there 'cause of that.

This is all fall out for moto related deaths in all the local mountain roads. It should blow over in a month or two.

Re: Sun Oct 7th - Palomar, Julian, Ocotillo, Sunrise Highway and back

Rick_72 - It can be tough to link up with a sport bike riding group when your new because of the challenges on both sides.  Either you feel rushed to keep up or the pack feels held back keeping an eye on you. Most of the runs I organize would be more for the intermediate to experienced riders as the pace, terrain and distance require a minimum level of aptitude in order to return home before it gets dark (some runs span 10 hours and 380 miles). Your best bet is hook up with a riding partner for a while and get some miles behind you. Theres no replacement for road experience. It is a lot less complicated to learn the ropes without a bunch of different riders all over you in unfamiliar territory. Every so often, I coordinate a causal ride which I usually post in the forum off the link in my signature below. Your more than welcome to come along on one of those casual rides so you can get a feel for the area and get a little experience in a group when the pace is slow and the time out is not so long.

Palomar Mountain has always been a hot spot for law enforcement but its usually in conjunction with "Squid" season. I ride the mountain and adjoining areas every other weekend, year round, and its not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. For the most part, they are after the serious offenders and leave everyone else alone. If you ride smart, keep your eyes pealed and dont put other drivers at risk then your chances of getting stopped is minimal.
