    Speeding ?'s

I will admit that from time to time I will go about 5 over the limit, mostly to keep up with traffic, but it more often than not it stops there.  But a couple of weeks ago I was riding in a car with some friends going down the interstate.  The speed limit is 70 mph, we had the cruise set at 75.  We were in a hurry but the driver didn't want a ticket.  Another person in the car said you could go 79 and still be fine withthe cops.  It didn't really  make sense to me but they said the cops usually go  "Nine your'e  fine, Ten  your'e mine"  so going 79 would  be fine.  We upped the speed without an encounter, but has anyone ever heard that?  Does it really make sense?  Do any officers, yourselves or others, follow a similar mantra?

    Re: Speeding ?'s

I have never heard of some unwritten code for highway or any other leo that write speeding tickets...there are some that will hit you with a ticket for being 3 mph over while there are some that would let 15 mph over be the limit.  It's just a chance game when you are out there...

If I had to guess though 10 would be the starting point for where most leo's set their guns to..If I wrote them I would probably set it to15 with no breaks when I stop you

    Re: Speeding ?'s

i think it all depends on the officer. one time i got pulled over for going twice the speedlimit. ( 50 in a 25) and he let me go with a warning. no ticket. i guess it was def my lucky day. if u get pulled over just be polite and calm. shut off the bike ect. the more safer an officer feels the more of a chance he or she will give you a break. or just dont speed and u wont have a problem ;)

    Re: Speeding ?'s

Definately depends. Here in Texas, the "general" rule is 10 over, 5 over in a School Zone. Where I worked at one time the policy was 12 over to stop, but several officers wouldn't stop until 15. It was up to the officer whether to issue a citation or not.

State law allows a citation to be issued for 1 over, but that's pretty rare.

We usually ride at about 9 or so over and have never been bothered.

    Re: Speeding ?'s

8 over is my 'lucky' number, both on the bike and in my cars... but if i start blowing past tons of cars ill slow as to not attract attention.  but then again, each ticket i get... i tend to speed less and less.

ive been pulled over for doing 82 in a 65 and let off.  i obviously wasnt a danger to the complete lack of cars on the freeway at that time, but the cop could have easily ruined my week w/ an expensive ticket.  instead we had a nice lil convo.

    Re: Speeding ?'s

I usually don't start writting tickets until about 15-20 over the posted speed limit. usually troopers are the only ones that write 5 over. I'd written tickets for 10 over but I mostly stick to 15-20.

    Re: Speeding ?'s

I don't know what the big deal is about this few mph over anyway.  3 over, 5 over, 9 over?  Doesn't anyone realize that running 5 mph over the limit doesn't get you there that much quicker?  If you were making a 70 mile trip and rode at a speed limit of 70 mph, you would get there in 1 hour.  Going 5 mph over is going to save you about 4-5 minutes time getting there.  Duh.....Is it really worth it for that?  If you're going to speed, make it worth while and twist the throttle, or better yet, just ride at the speed limit and get there safe and hassle free.

    Re: Speeding ?'s

I usually go slightly faster than traffic so that I am never sitting in one place relative to the traffic.  It seems to me that I am more visible and therefore safer if I am moving at a different speed than the rest of traffic.

    Re: Speeding ?'s

I agree one-hundred percent headshot.  I will intentionally speed up through a driver's blind spot unless i'm 99% sure the driver i'm passing has seen me and is aware of my position. Especially with trucks...  I think it is much safer when you don't have to be as much concerned with drivers coming up on you (one less thing to worry about).  However...

This brings me to a question for the LEO's on the site:

When you pull over a younger guy, on a bike or in another vehicle, what do you want to/prefer to hear from the alleged offender? i'm sure it's different from person to person but are there any commonalities at all? And if we were to bring up reasoning for going slightly faster than other traffic, such as what me and headshot mentioned, does that come across as an excuse and we shouldn't even bother? I would just like to hear a few opinions on this matter.

btw i'm 20 years old and have never been pulled over..... don't plan on doing anything to cause it either

    Re: Speeding ?'s

Check your local laws to get an idea of what the law enforcement there will let slide.  For example, here in FL we can't ticket for 1-5 mph over, only give a warning.  However, if you're going one to five over in a school/construction zone, you're looking at $166.50.  In terms of what speed you can travel without being pulled over, there is no universal answer.  Some guys here stop people for 15 and up, but that is not everyone.  If a cop was really bored he could pull you over for 5 over, 8 over, whatever.  Honestly, when I travel on the interstate (in a car) I go 8-10 over.  But I could always be stopped.  Also, we all know that some cops have it out for motorcyclists, especially sportbike riders.  Unfortunately, a few spoil it for the rest of us responsible riders.  You just have to use common sense.  As for what to say, just be honest and don't offer up a lot of information that you're not asked for.  Just answer what they ask you briefly and be polite.  If they want to ticket you they will.  You can always take it to court (good luck with that).

    Re: Speeding ?'s

    Hey guys..New to this fourm.

    I just picked up a new 08CBR1K a few months ago...what a machine!

Anywayssss.. I'm and old guy here (38) and my stupid speeding days are semi-past me. The ocassional onramp blast or a quick spirited bump to 3 digits. I have not received a ticket in anyway in well over a decade.
I was curious about something I read though regarding fighting a ticket. This guy mentioned that it had worked for him on three different occasions.
He would delay the court date by saying he had a Dr appt or something..he would I think do this a few times. When he finally did go in the LEO was a no show, pleaded not guilty, and I guess walked off scott free.

Just curious if this was plauseable ?

    Thanks guys!

Sounds like a good way to abuse the court system.  Where I work we are required to be in court, and in turn the court is required to notify us of when that is.  That way no matter how many times it is continued we will be there.  Depending on the judge, they may still hear the state's evidence without you there, and possibly find you guilty.  I would say that's even more likely when you're a perpetual no-show.  It's the whole "the boy that cried wolf" thing.  If you abuse the system it will eventually catch up to you.  If you have no good defense, either pay your penalty outright or be a man and show up for court and ask the judge to go easy.  Don't be a cheapskate.

Like I mentioned, more a curiosity more than anything... If I get a ticket and i asked for it then I'd bite the bullet and pay up. Lol..

    Re: Speeding ?'s

Another thought while riding, turned to a question here..( Very cool fourm Btw.)

I was told years ago by a lady police officer acquaintance there where certain areas on the road she knew she could speed a bit w less worry about being nailed. If I recall correctly one was large sweeping turns maybe? (Hard for radar?)
She had a few, but at the time I was bike-less so I guess I really didn't pay attention.

I was wondering what areas might this be true? I would assume for example on a Interstate approacing the upside of a large overpass. Assuming my rear was clear and obviously slowing down before the crest.

    I wondered about on ramps.

Like I mentioned before I mostly ride conservatively, but I do occasionally bust the speed limit for a few seconds here and there. I wondered if there might be better places than others.
Yes on the Track would be best!  Ha!

    Thanks again
