trackdays and tire changes
so assuming your addicted to trackdays and yet uve only got 1 bike in the stable... wat do u do for tires??
a) buy an extra set of wheels so u dont have to constantly swap tires b) buy a tire changing machine to do it yourself c) buy wheels and the machine d) find a hookup for tire changing so its not 90$ a trackday jus to swap street/track tire
so wheels are lookin to be around 450$ w/ rotors. a good tire changer is 600$ from No-Mar and a cheap one from Harbor Freight is under $100. ive been spoiled w/ real changers b4 (Coats) and dont think id feel comfortable going w/ the HF one, the design is horrible, but u never kno. any suggestions?

Re: trackdays and tire changes
my thoughts would be do it one step at a time, first second set of wheels and track tires. then tire machine. then....change tire for other track riders for a small fee. that can get you a little more return on your envestment!
CBR929-jardine race can, down 1, polished frame and swing arm, wheels polished, HELI bars, Sargent seat, Puig racing screen
commuting on a VLX600 shadow for now, 60MPG!!! I punched out the baffles, so it has that V-twin snap and crackle that made H/D so infamous. Except this little scute is rice powered!!lol
and once in a while a 98 gold wing, its a scarey fast 2 wheeled yacht!!

Re: trackdays and tire changes
i'd just do the wheels for now Stang. even if you had the tire changer, you'd have to invest in a good wheel balancer (probably $200-$250). watch out for the sensitivity of the bearings though. the more
sensitive to the weight changes, the better. but unfortunately, the
more $$$. and the only thing you'd swap out are the wheels, which would be a breeze (and time saver) over a tire machine. can't forget the time you'll spend mounting/demounting and balancing (which sometimes can take as long as demount/mount). harbor freight ain't bad. that's what my buddy uses when i come over to swap tires. i only did so back then when i take some of his somewhat lightly used takeoff and we had to do a trackday w/o the usual tire folks there (where I might get the swap for free since tires are from them, and if they remember me or they're in a good mood ). the trick to the harbor freight is the *correct* tools. the stand itself is fine even if not bolted down. we use the nomar mount/demount bar. that really helps over the standard bars harbor freight sells. a few quick clamps, very good lube (can't stress lube enough else you'll be sweating like a pig. get it? lube LOL), rim protectors that go around the lip and you should be set. i seriously contemplated getting the nomar last year, but alas, i don't have enough garage space for it. and since i dedicated the bike to be race bike, i normally get my tires at race weekends anyway. on caveat on the nomar, it ain't as easy on the videos. we were watching another duc rider use the hitch mounted tire changer with all the nomar "helps you remove the tire quick" tools. after a day's practice, summer, and with everyone watching, i felt bad for him. he was seriously tiring. it could've been the first time he was using it, or does not have the practice yet. but the tires they use on nomar videos aren't quite as pliable as it may seem to be. case in point: i had a beotch of a time removing my street tires (Metzler M3's). they were so stiff, i think they injected them with viagra instead of silica.

Re: trackdays and tire changes
hubbard, i was actually thinking i could jus post up on craigslist that id swap ppls tires over for a mild fee if i bought the NoMar. theres a guy in NorCal that runs a great business doin this. however, i figured legal stuff would get in my way, esp over insurance. maybe if i had em sign a waiver...
high_revs, haha, havent u read any of my other tire threads? im actually quite adamant about NOT balancing tires. while i used to mount my own at Discount Tire Co (so i kno ALL the tricks for auto and MC tires), i finally lets some guy at CG balance my tires since i was paying for the mount and of course he claimed it would make a world of difference... ya, def no change. i cant argue w/ no vibration on 7 or 8 unbalanced sets of tires over the years.
good to kno that u use the NoMar bar and the HF rim clamp w/ success. the low price is really the only reason y im still considering it. so thats 110$ for the HF and another 100$ for the NoMar bar, right?
abad, so every 8k street miles u spend 40$ extra for mount/dismount... and every 5-6 trackdays (assuming ure as slow as i am) the same??
damn this expensive lifestyle...

Re: trackdays and tire changes
YAY... wheels/rotors r in the mail. hopefully i wont get jacked like last time off ebay w/ a bent rotor. $460 shipped isnt horrible IMO... yes it could have been better, but i get a pair of SuperCorsas w/ 1 race supposedly, a machined rear rotors, both front rotors, and the cush drive too.
oh and high_revs... my credit has def improved since getting back into trackdays, only because my limits r increasing though i owe em bout the same. so i guess its not all bad.

Re: trackdays and tire changes
kewl!!! you can always get the rotors check. dunno if SoCal has something equivalent to GP Wheel and Frame here in NorCal. but that price ain't bad. Gixxer rims are hella expensive and you'd be lucky to get a cush drive for that price.

Re: trackdays and tire changes
Admin:I can't afford that many tires, so mine actually have to last more than one trackday... maybe 3 or 4 actually .
oh i def dont get on new rubber everytime out. im also hoping to get atleast 4 trackdays on my PRs. i bought the hard ones so maybe 5 or 6. its jus that w/ only 1 set of wheels, i was forced to constant swap btw track and street rubber for each trackday, at a heavy price. No sense in ruining good track tires by heat cycling them on the street.

i put about 2-3 trackdays plus maybe 2-4 races (or race practice days) on the same set! i swear, those power races are awesome! then again, i'm not fast either. i used to do the 1 raceday, 1 practice day (the next race weekend). but that was throwing away very good tires for my speed.

Re: trackdays and tire changes
what track day orgs are you riding with that charge so much to change your tires?? are they taking the wheel off for you too?
With STT or NESBA, mounting and balancing is free when you buy tires through them (and their prices can't be beat).
if you just bring them the wheels and tires, they'll charge you $20/wheel, which is pretty reasonable if you ask me...
anyone charging $45/tire at the track is insane... just buy good DOT legal track tires and don't swap them at all. 90% of your street riding is on the part of the tire you don't use at the track anyway.

Re: trackdays and tire changes
at the races, mounting and balancing is free. but people are asking about outside the races here.
