so my friend wants to buy a 2008 r6 cause he says it can out run my 2007 cbr 600rr. i've heard the cbr is quicker but does anyone know for sure? also i've heard the yamahas have a lot of mechanical and electrical problems, anyone know anything about this? thanks all :)

in World Supersport... Yammie won the first race as the 2 lead guys for Honda took eachother out, but Honda still managed to take positions 2nd-5th.  Honda swept the podium in race two. 

also, i dont think any motorcycle of the 4 japanese manufacturers are more prone to mechanical and electrical failures as long as u take care of the bike, esp not w/ new models.

..... id bet there r more than a few guys that can out run both of you on their 15yr-old 600cc motorcycles.  maybe not in a roll-on on the freeway, but in the twisties, at the racetrack, on the 1/8th mile.. etc.

i think the only difference in 07 and 08 models of the R6 is the YCCI (motogp derived) plus more torque down while still keeping the rev limits high (though you need aftermarket Yammy parts to reach that infamous 17K revs). you also get a magnesium subframe for weight savings. compression was increased and you get a slipper clutch (i'd say that's helpful though more like a shortcut for newer riders as they don't get to experience and learn to blip the throttle, and some racers still do even with a slipper clutch). you do get an all-new frame though whereas the cbr is on its second year.

but in the end, both the cbr and honda are close. hard to say who will be better based on U.S. based AMA racing since i think both Yammy and Honda did some backdoor deal where one will focus on Formula Extreme while the other on 600 supersport. Not sure why they won't go head-to-head, factory vs. factory. on wss, there's so much customized performace parts, some factory backed by, that you need to find how it does stock for stock.

my take, get what you like to get. racing on paper is kinda worthless as the rider has foremost input on it.

I can tell you that I saw first hand Josh Hayes take a stock 2007 CBR600RR and do 1:42 lap times on it at Daytona. In fact it was nearly as quick as the 2006 FX CBR600RR riden by Rockwall Honda.

On the other hand I also had a chance to race against an 08 R6 (it was stock) against my 2008 Triumph 675 (also stock other than a slip on) and it walked away from me on the long straight at Willow Springs, while I would reel it in, in the corners.

For street use though, I would never by a Yamaha R6. It is a very uncormfortable bike for street commuting. The bike is designed specifically for the track, and the useful power, even on the 08, is still up high in the rev range. It is slightly better than the 06-07, but not enough to help on the street.

If I had a choice between these two bikes for street use, I would pick the Honda.
