    Open stock header?

I'm wondering if I'll do any damage to my 98 F3 by running an open header for a few days.   I know right now that it's not going to be permanent, I'm just the curious type and want to see what it'd be like and to be able to say and know that I've done it.

From what I've heard, as long as you keep the stock header there is no reason to rejet.  I believe the bike has an OEM air filter in it still (going to check this, and most likely replace it over spring break)  Only modification to the bike (that I know of) is a RS-3 slipon and (slightly) tightened CCT.

most likely, the only actual damage will be to your wallet... from the noise violation tickets your going to get.  without a muffler, u r dramatically increasing the chance of cracking an exhaust valve... but thats still not to say that it will for sure happen.

as for u bring up a rejet, i dont understand wat your asking... r u implying that u wouldnt need to rejet the bike if u ran just the stock header, w/out a muffler??  this is def incorrect, as the bike will run like crap w/out the muffler.  u may feel that it runs better and that your getting more HP... but most likely its jus the extra noise overshadowing a large loss in low and mid-range torque.

however, if u simply mean using a slip-on muffler w/ no change to the stock head... then ya, dont worry about a rejet.  the bike will run slightly better w/ a rejet (even w/ a purely stock exhaust), but unless u really really need the 2 extra HP, dont worry about it.

oh, and the search function is your friend, as this has been talked about quite a bit.

    Re: Open stock header?

one word. backpressure. (maybe its two, im not the best at spelling)

the smaller an engine is (600cc is very small) the more the important back pressure becomes. i dont know the specifics but, basically your bike will run like hell. the idle will be rough and engine breaking would be out of the question because it would back fire horribly.

I dont think it would harm the bike if you are gentle with it when the header is open. if you beat on it and bring it up to red line and engine break it down to 5k your asking for trouble.

either way i wouldnt recomend it, its loud, obnoxious, and a bad idea in general.

Xeno151 is right,  the change in exhaust gas velosity is horrible.(BTW ....ANY back pressure IS BAD).  I tried removing the end can while my bike was on the dyno.....End result?......Ear smashing noise, louder than anything I've ever heard, and a HUGE drop In Power!

    It sounds like shite also.......LOL.
