    Best advice

The best advice I can give to improve as a rider is first to take an MSF BRC, then just RIDE.  Once you've taken the course and you know the basics of getting the bike moving, it will do you no good to then buy a bike and go back to a parking lot to practice.  Get out there and RIDE.   If you ever plan on riding on the street you have to get used to riding in traffic.  First time I ever rode on  a street  was when I bought my first bike, and I rode it from the dealership to my house 50 miles.  If you're scared to ride you shouldn't be riding.  Take your time, but get those miles in.  Practice being smooth, with throttle, brake, everything.  You will automatically become smoother at all operations, including the dreaded slow speed maneuvers, like u-turns.  Find some back roads and just enjoy the ride.  Make short trips across town to see friends or go to the bank.  You WILL become a better rider.  Then, down the road if you wish to hone your skills even more, you can take MSF's advanced rider course, superbike school, attend a track day, etc.  There are many good books out there also.  The books can't guide you as you ride, obviously, but they have a lot of good information in them.  Also, see if you can find some riding buddies.  Just make sure you don't become overconfident, because that is when you and/or your bike will get hurt or killed.  A squid gives us all a bad name.  With that said, during all this riding, you should always wear FULL GEAR.  This means helmet, gloves, jacket (preferably designed for riding, with elbow, shoulder, and back protection), and long pants.  Technically you should wear footwear that covers the ankle, but if you have to be "cool" it is better to skip this than skip wearing a helmet.  Just wear SHOES, not flip-flops!  Hope this helps any new riders out there.
