    Quick starts

How high do you rev your engine before letting the clutch out in a drag racing start?  It seems like there would be a fine line between burning out and flipping over backwards.  I know you can't let the clutch out too fast, we all know what will happen.  But if you let it out too slow you will just burn out, right?  I just want to be able to produce a slingshot type of start.  I don't want to modify my bike for drag racing, I just want to be faster at starting.  I know it takes practice and we have a local dragstrip here with open track nights.  I know I'm going to get embarrassed the first few times I go, but I was just wondering if I could get some pointers.  Thanks.

    Re: Quick starts

i actually had a thread like this here... maybe on page 2 if not on page 1. similar post but slightly different (not because it's focused on road racing, but same concept applies).

you are correct in you can burn your clutch. that's why you don't slightly let off the clutch until you know the green is close to drop. it's probably easier on the drag strip since in road racing, the starter can be quick, or can be darn slow at the #1 board. which sucks cuz you're burning your clutch then.

as for revs, it actually varies by bike. what i noticed is the higher the size of engine, the lower the revs. i had my fzr400 taching at like 9 or even 10k at a race start. but since it's light, won't really do a 12 o'clock at start, i was good with it.

what bike you running? 600cc? probably 7-9K (9k tops). i think i have my 750 on 7k off the start. and the clutch just ever so slightly moving the wheel. it also depends on your gearing!

then it's a smooth roll on and letting go of clutch. my problem is i don't roll on fast enough.

WOW  I would of bet money that would of ended up looping over.    Guess I got a lot to learn and work up to.....

    Re: Quick starts

you'd only loop if the you twist the throttle a little too fast. you can always modulate it via the clutch also to kill some of the lurch (not to mention clutch wear), but that would also bring your revs up if you don't let off the throttle. it's practice. unfortunately for me, i have no place to practice other than the trackdays, and even there, only infineon raceway gives a really good length to pratice starts that gets me up to 2nd gear. buttonwillow and thunderhill do not have enough room. Sad
