    Helmet Help

Bought a brand new helmet, but it's a size too big :( Is there a way to refit the padding to make it tighter, or am I just SOL for a new helmet.

If I'm SOL, anyone want to trade for a size Large brand new HJC Draco in black and silver? I'm looking for a similar brand black and silver Medium...HJC or KBC or another similarly priced brand!

    Re: Helmet Help

usually, padding won't make up that much for 1 size down. not sure if it's wortwhile buying one and trying. i say... sell it and buy a new one.

    Re: Helmet Help

Did you try on the helmet before you bought it? I dont think enough padding will make up the difference in size, though I could be wrong. I would just try and sell or trade it for another helmet.

    Re: Helmet Help

even w/ more padding, it will never protect your head the way it was designed to do being a size too big.  also, dont forget that helmets stretch... so this helmet might actually be 2 sizes too big.  so ya, u r SOL.  return it, sell it, do wateva to atleast make some $$ back.  ebay might be your best bet as there r a lot of idiots there that will pay almost retail for a used helmet.  then, go to a motorcycle shop and get properly fit by a knowledgeable salesman.

    Re: Helmet Help

+1 on what everyone else said...

Now I am not familiar with HJC...but from what I have heard, Scorpion Helmets use the same size shell for certain size helmets...I think that I have heard that their small and medium helmets are the same outter shell and their large and extra large helmets are the same outter shell, but the actual fit is determined by the padding inside the helmet.   Can't remember where I heard this though...so you may want to do some reserch of your own.

Again, I am not sure how true this is...but if it is the case, it is possible that HJC does something similar.

The best way to find out is talk to a HJC retailer or rep.  They can tell you for certain if any sizes share the same shell and if they do, whether or not padding alone will change the fit to your NEEDS.

So...first thing I would do is talk to a HJC retailer or rep.  But I would definately be ready to get a new helmet that I know is gonna protect my head when I go down.

    Re: Helmet Help

jus for clarification.... the "padding" that actually gives a helmet its 'fit' is not the cloth and foam liner that u r thinking of.  rather, underneath all that comfort stuff is the EPS (expanded polystyrene) form that actually gives the helmet its shape.  same material that real cycling helmets are made out of.  this hard styrofoam-like material is made to crush to prevent that load from being transfered to your head.  the cloth and foam stuff does nada.  so even if a helmet shell is the same size as another, the EPS form on the inside will be a different shape... and im pretty sure u cant get it out w/out destroying the helmet.

    Re: Helmet Help

I guess HJC just isn't for me then - I went in to the store to try on an HJC medium and it wouldn't even get on my head. My friend let me try on a brand new KBC medium that fit well....I'll probably just sell it and cut my losses. It's never been down - I always baby the stuff that I pay money for :)

Any idea of the best protection for the buck? I've heard great things about Arai and Shoei but I don't feel like spending $500+ on a helmet just yet. Thanks for all the inisght!

    Re: Helmet Help

u cant exactly compare sizes between brands... hell even between models of the same brand.  ex... i wear a M in Arai Quantum2, but a S in Arai RX-7, and an XS in the KBC wateva POS.  my HJC dirt helmet is a M i believe.

if u dont want to spend 500$, get a Scorpion EXO-400 for 99.95$ from www.sportbiketrackgear.com.... but go try it on somewhere first.  a buddy of mind had one n i liked it, and there r a few other helmet/gear threads that recommend these helmets as well.
