WERA Buttonwillow Race Vid / Pics / Report
Haven't posted in a while, so thought I'd put up a race vid and a couple of pics.
I went out and ran with WERA West today at Buttonwillow Raceway in Central California. It was actually one of those days that was perfect. Good weather, no mechanical issues... just fill up the bike with gas and go. Finally think I have all the gremlins sorted on the Triumph!
I decided to have some fun today by entering the Mini race. This is for bikes with 80cc's or less. Well, it just so happens my pit bike (a 2008 Yamaha Zuma) is 49cc's. The top speed got pegged at 41mph while I was going around the track. It was funny to see the pics of me on the scooter in full leathers (see pic below) but I had fun racing against another guy on a Zuma and a chick on a Honda NSR50. They both had power on me on the straights, but I gapped them good in the turns. Nothing like scrapping the sides of a scooter. Anyway, I ended up beating both of them, but lost out big time to the bigger 80cc bikes, so I finished 3rd overall.
On to the Triumph now. I had one race to get the 675 ready to do battle with my nemisis Tyler Odom and his Ducati 848. I was racing in Heavyweight Twins Superbike as the second wave with C Superstock (600cc machines) in front of us. (The 675 is eligible to race against heavyweight twins in WERA). After the first wave took off we got to go about 10-15 seconds after the last guy rounded Turn 1. I got an okay start, and moved into 2nd place behind Tyler after Turn 6 on the first lap. Race would have been very boring as Tyler was 2 seconds a lap quicker than me, but there were plenty of guys from the first wave that I kept picking off, so I stayed entertained. Within 6 laps, I was able to pick off 7 guys from the first wave. Best lap time was a dismal 1:56.3.
Last race of the day C Superbike (Race #9 and video below). I was gridded dead last (21st or 22nd I believe), and got a great start and passed a bunch of people by going to the outside of everyone in Turn 1. I was able to get by a few people but then saw Bryce Prince and Tyler Odom get by me. (Tyler just out motored me on the straight. Damn 848!)
It was probably the best race I have been in, even though I finished 9th. I set a personal best lap of 1:54.794, and that was on the last lap (not in video). Consistency was key in this race. From lap 2 to lap 6, I did a 1:55.194, 1:55.051, 1:55.020, 1:54.999 and finally a 1:54.794. A lot of fun doing that race. I'm sure I could have cracked into the 53's with a couple of more laps.

Thanks Stang. I have actually been racing quite a bit this year (4 out of the last 5 weekends in fact), so had to post something up.
The transponder is actually done a way that I saw at a Track Day. Basically, get yourself a long strap of velcro with a loop on one end. Then sew on the base plate of the transponder on the strap. Put the transponder on, and then just wrap the velcro around your boot. When you have more than one bike, this ensures you don't forget your transponder, since it is always on you. I have also crashed already with the thing on my boot and it stayed right where it was supposed to.
I think it is a great idea and works perfectly. No more worrying about losing a transponder.

Yeah Mario, it was a last minute thing. I had fun trying to max out my speed on it. Got it up to 41mph. he he I was racing the other guy on the Zuma and a girl on a Honda NSR50. It was a blast scraping the bottom of the scooter in the turns.
And yes, that is the Starlane Athon 3R lap timer / data logger system. It is by far the best thing I have ever bought. Love it.

ya i watched the Streets vid u had posted recently too. def good stuff. 1:19... u sir are ridiculous in a good way. everytime i improve my laptimes u drop even more time as well. i jus made it to 1:27.0 last weekend. any tips??
good idea bout the transponder. Fastrack had me hide theirs under my passenger seat n i def could c myself forgetting about it when switching bikes.
for the Starlane dash... is that the model w/ the GPS timing or does it run off the same signal as the AMB stuff?? if GPS, how do the times compare to actual (AMB)?

Re: WERA Buttonwillow Race Vid / Pics / Report
Stang,
For the Streets, it's all about corner speed. I only use 2nd and 3rd gear 99% of the time. I shift into 4th twice for about a total of 3 seconds. Once on the front straight and once on the back straight. Everything else is keeping it pinned.
The dash is the Starlane Athon 3R - and yes, it is GPS based lap times. My times are within .1 second of my AMB transponder. Usually even less than that. My best lap time from Buttonwillow this past weekend was 1:54.794 and Starlane showed 1:54.774, so that is only .02 of a second difference.
I like the Starlane, cause it allows me to set 3 split times as well, which is really helpful to me. I use the last split time to tell me if I am gonna have a quick lap time or not. I love the thing! ANd of course, I use the shift lights all the time.

Re: WERA Buttonwillow Race Vid / Pics / Report
really as in "no mods" Mario. most scooters i tested with aftermarket exhaust wind up too long before they move. i didn't like that though supposedly, you can adjust it by putting more weights on the fly wheel (or something like that). a big bore kit would be nice since i use it a lot around home for errands (take me almost forever to get to 40-45mph (indicated on speedo). but i hate mucking around something that works just find as is. as i read more on zuma mods, it gets to a point you have to do 2-3 more thing to make it right after 1 mod.

High Revs, in WERA you can mod the crap out of the scooter. You won't keep up with the 80cc bikes, but you will kick the crap out of the stock scooters like mine. The other two people I was racing were faster in a straight line, and I just passed and weaved through them in the corners. Like I said, it was fun scrapping the bottom of the scooter in the turns.

Re: WERA Buttonwillow Race Vid / Pics / Report
yeah.. i just didn't want to tinker with it. read too many horror stories for me to want to tinker with it. if anything, the suspension is crap. i took mine up the hill to play golf one time (yes, golf bag in between my legs so no accidental falls for the clubs on the road). 20-25mph only up the grade. problem was on the way down, i can pick up speed. on corner, it had a dip that's not visible (kinda like laguna's T6). scared the crap out of me when the scooter bounced. LOL but taht suspension isn't what i'd like going down hill. skeeeryyy!!!!

high_revs: as i read more on zuma mods, it gets to a point you have to do 2-3 more thing to make it right after 1 mod.
It's about right. It's always like that on 2-strokes. You add the pipe, you need the air-filter, you change the weights on the fly-wheel, you... make it a project bike . But it's also like track riding, it becomes addictive . So, let's start with a nice hand made italian pipe for $169 Then some Bitubo racing suspension... After that we play with the flywheels..... A special air filter... A bigger carburator kit ! Longer transmission for more top speed... And we could go on and on... . Can you tell I miss my 2-stroke scooter days ? It's really fun, specially if you like to tinker with these things. You just made me nostalgic, I'll blame you if one of these days I buy a second hand 50cc scooter and go completely crazy with it....

Mario.. I'm disappointed! where's the jet kits?!? just kidding... the pipe is very popular here in the U.S. Almost 80% of the Zuma's I checked had that pipe. I just don't like that long winding attempt before you take off like a bat from hell like on my buddy's pit bike.
