    f4i Sprocket swap

    Hey everybody!

I know this has been covered before, but after reading all the old sprocket posts, i'm still unclear as to what will work best.

I'm looking to go +2 on the back sprocket....i'm gonna replace them both (along with the chain) but keep the front one stock at 16 tooth..

What would the best kit to get, or should i purchase all of the items seperately?  I'm just looking for a good source to order this setup from so i can begin the install as soon as possible.  Also i wanna go with the 520 chain, is there a certain amount of links i need to order for this?

I guess i'm just looking to know exactly what sprockets and chains will work best for this kind of modificaion.

    thanks in advance.

the number of links needed would be the same regardless of chain pitch.  I suspect the chain length would change for 0/+2.  This sprocket configuratioin would physically only need one link.  But chains can only change in increments of 2 links.  So your chain length wouldn't change but your rear wheel will move closer towards the front.  Personally, I'd play safe and get a 120 link chain and cut it (but I also have the tools for that).

    Re: f4i Sprocket swap

i bought a 110 link erv1 back in the day on my f4 (should be same as 01-03 f4i). worked on my -1/+2 (i think it was 110). I had about 3 or 4 links extra. but i also did it in such a way that the wheel was closest to the front to give the chain ample space in the back to stretch w/o removing an extra couple of links.

but if you can get a 120, that's fine. i'd go for erv3 or ek chains. (can't remember which EK but some racing buds of mine use that).

kits are not badly priced, but i've done better getting individual ones but i did have to do some searching. try planetracing and white buffalo for the chain prices. they're the best i've seen recently. for sprockets, depends if you want an alloy or steel in the back. i like afam and vortex myself, though there's some nicer ones out there. my sprocket specialist was a so-so, seems to wear out fast back on the f4i. but my vortex on the gixxer, jeez, it looks like it's not even wearing and i compared it against a brand new afam sprocket and the teeth are good!

    Re: f4i Sprocket swap

Thanks for the help guys. I think i'm ready to order, just have one more question.  I'm going with a vortex +3 (49 tooth) on the rear and i want to keep the stock sprocket on front (15 tooth) as long as the wear isn't too bad.  I'm also going to get the D.I.D. 520 chain with 120 links just to make sure i have enough.

Will the 520 chain work with the stock front sprocket?  Just didn't know if i needed to get a whole new sprocket with this 520 conversion.

    Re: f4i Sprocket swap

it's stock so it's most likely a 525, so it won't work. need to change the front to a 520 pitch too

    ditto.

You can't mix 525 sprockets with 520 chain.

    Re: f4i Sprocket swap

Just wanted to do a follow up with my sprocket progress.   I ordered Vortex front and rears, it's -1/+2 with the DID 520 x ring.

    here's a pic.

    Re: f4i Sprocket swap

Question is the front sprocket steel and the back aluminium?

    I was thinking about a 16T steel front and a 49T steel back with a stock 525-110 chain. I think it'll work.

Let me know how your setup works.

    Re: f4i Sprocket swap

Well i'm just following up with my sprockets.  I had them put on at a local shop and it only cost me $75 for the install which i'm very happy about.  I was expecting about 150 or 200 for the labor.

Here are some pics of the finished product, sorry the photos were taken from my phone so the quality isn't great. It's just so much easier to send pics directly to my email from my phone rather than taking them from my camera.

It's a -1/+2 up 520 conversion that cost me right around $200 for the sprockets and DID x-ring chain.  The chain alone was about $100.

If anybody has any questions about doing this conversion let me know and i'll point you in the right direction for getting it.

    Re: f4i Sprocket swap

Hey there. I want to do this same exact 520 conversion to my 01 f4i. I just have a few questions though, can you tell a difference in accelearation and is it easier to get it up on one wheel? O and one more question where did you get your sprockets and chain from? Was it right from www.vortexracing.com? Thanks in advance.

    Re: f4i Sprocket swap

I used Kneedraggers.com and had good service...the parts all arrived on time.

The bike has got balls now!  I can pull up second gear wheelies very easily.  The only downfall to this upgrade is that the speedo becomes off quite a bit and the motor runs higher rpm at highway speeds.  I'm about 7k rpm at 80 or so.

I absolutely love the upgrade though, it really woke the bike up.  Like i said, i can slip the clutch in 2nd gear and the bike pops right up on a wheelie.

I'm having a great time with this gearing, i just hope my chain can hold up to all this abuse!

    Re: f4i Sprocket swap

Okay then ill probably use kneedraggers.com always like it when the parts arrive when they are suppose to.

Are you serious second gear wheelies! O boy im getting this upgrade for my bike haha. Ya did you ever get a speedohealer or not? And what kind of gas mileage do you get now with this gearing?

Haha ya that wouldnt be good if your chain broke, they're not cheap. lol. Thanks again.
