Just wondering if any body on occasion wears a "pot" or "german" style helmet around town or other occasions? Ive been thinking about geting one for "sunday" rides. Once in a while i like to go off and do a little site seeing on my bike.....slower paced relaxing rides once in a while. mainly back roads with scenic spots like ponds or river side stops. Was thinking this would be an alternative to geting fried in my full facer. I also have a full facer, that retracts up to a 3/4. but it's still hot as a glass kiln in town traffic! So i was thinkingabout a "pot" as athird choice.
And I know....I know, I should never skimp on gear. I should be fully protected at all times! But in the real world, things arent perfect and our summers run mid 90's - 85% and up humidity. I already keep head ache pills under the seat for dehydration headaches. So, try as i might, full gear aint always going to make it along for the ride.
I'm just courios if , and how many, people have a "pot" for a second helmet.

I punched out the baffles, so it has that V-twin snap and crackle that made H/D so infamous. Except this little scute is rice powered!!lol and once in a while a 98 gold wing, its a scarey fast 2 wheeled yacht!!

Re: Who has a "pot helmet"??
you know the head ache thing was a little side note right? besides then i'd have a reason for a cup holder!! You missed my point completely....... On the east coast it's a style trend thats starting to cross over from the chrome crowd to the sport riders. Cruise the beaches on the weekends and you see them (md has a "helmet on head" law). the stunt crowd has taken to them as well. I'm starting to see them a lot . I'm intrested more from a simplicity/minimalist point of view (i just want less of a closed in window effect once in a while). But It got me wondering how many people are wearing them.

hehe, naw i didnt miss your point. i just ignored it because of the glaring lack of safety that u already kno about and because ive never even though about wearing such a helmet. i bought my little brother one for his bday because i wanted to make sure he got a helmet that was DOT approved.... but look wat he did to it:

Re: Who has a "pot helmet"??
The half helmets are still good, better than nothing that's for sure. That's all the police officers around here wear. Illinois doesn't have a helmet law so it's mostly either a full face helmet or no helmet for most riders.

Re: Who has a "pot helmet"??
LOL!!OH?! I just figured that the pic for a joke?! I realy coulnt care less about the hair actualy. The look works for that crowd. I used to have long hair, but got tired of it knoting on my bike. i just kinda grew out of the look my self. I have an HJC thats snell rated. I like it, but its a cinder block on you sholders, then i have my KBC modular, its lite and air flows well through it, and its louder. Ive read a few peices that suggest that the snell helmets are great for high speed impacts. But that the DOT ones seem to offer better results in low speed accidents. Less "brain sloshing" in the DOT ones at low speed (25-50) but more terminal injury in high speed injuries(65 and up). the snell helmets got poorer marks from 25-50 because of their stiffer nature, but excelled in 65 and up injuries. So I'm kinda on the fence till i find more info. But the "brain Bucket" in studies I've read about , havent placed that far behind the others to make me overly worried. The big problem in my area is that people are wearing the novaltiy helmets whitch are illegal.Of course 20 miles away in DEL. the helmet law just means you have to have a helmet for every rider on the bike with you but not needed on your head. I wear one regardless......

Re: Who has a "pot helmet"??
I'm in Jersey and I bought one for kicks and giggles a little while ago. Same kinda situation with you that led to me buying it. I think I've worn it once riding around a parking lot and realized that the only other time I'd wear it would be riding 15mph up and down a beach (which is not my thing anyway).

Re: Who has a "pot helmet"??
A guy in my office is a hardcore bicyclist guy and he had a nasty crash doing about 25mph (hit a huge pothole and went over the HB). He managed to get 2 concussions and fracture his skull in a couple places. I find those "pot helmets" to be very similar to a bicycle helmet so this is my argument against open face helmets. You dont' have to be going very fast to do alot of damage.

Re: Who has a "pot helmet"??
I disagree, severly! I believe the only thing that the bicycle helmet and the D.O.T. POT have in common is the name helmet. The D.O.T POT covers the top of the ear, and dips down to the base of the skull in back. It has about 2 inches of protective foam between the liner and the shell. And it also has to pass an impact test to recieve it's certification.
Most bicycle helmuts are just a thin vacum molded piece of plastic thats only about 4 mils thick. It has only about an inch of foam that has huge air vents cut all through it. It is over the ear line on the side of the head. and up over the base of the skull in back, giving no protection to the base of the skull. and i could be wrong , but I'm not aware of any govenrment saftey testing..........There might be an ansi or iso standard, but they are much more relaxed than the DOT tests.
I seriously doubt that your friend would have suffered the skull fractures if he had been wearing the DOT helmet.

Re: Who has a "pot helmet"??
What i was trying to point out was that he fell on his face which could have just as easily happened with a pot helmet. The face is open and could come into direct contact with any object, just like a bike helmet. He got the concussion because he hit right on his cheekbone. Just imagine what could happen doing 60mph or faster?
I'm not going to disagree with the impact resistance of the two but it doesn't matter how impact resistant it is if whatever you are coming into contact with misses the helmet altogether!

Re: Who has a "pot helmet"??
Not meaning to start pugulist match or anything of the sort...but you were asking opinions. I understand that on each coast area, the big thing is the "Pot" helmet (black or chrome). Here in the Mid-west, only the Harley guys wear them. I think they look ludicrous (Corky-like).
But I know what you mean about cruising the beach with lack of air-flow, and I feel your pain bro. You said that you own (have owned) both an HJC and a KBC helmet...me too. But recently I bought a Scorpion helmet, & WOW. I couldn't believe how much more air flow I have with this helmet.
Personally, I would not be caught dead wearing the "Pot" helmet. Full face helmet for this man, or I won't ride. (I live in Michigan which has a helmet law but I live on the border of Wisconsin which has no helmet law. I do most of my riding in Wisconsin & I am never sans-helmet).
If you're looking for information on Snell & DOT test comparisons, check out <www.motorcyclistonline.com> (sometime last year) they did a comprehensive study (snell standard) all many brands of helmets as far as impact study. (They pi$$ed off many high-end helmet companies which pulled their advertisements...but they (motorcyclist) provided unbiased information.)
