F4i fuel pressure regulator..... Has anyone had issues with it?

So I'm 99% sure the fuel pressure regulator is NFG on my bike.  Has anyone else had issues with it?  I find it kind of funny that this part has had 3 part # now, with the new # ending with a 32.  I mean why update parts that have no issues?

Look at the CCTL... How many does it now have ? ....4?.

Yeah, I had to replace mine a year ago.  The bike was an 02 with only 1500 miles on it and I mistakenly ran some fuel system cleaner through the bike.  Ran INCREDIBLY rich...enough that it was shooting flames out of the exhaust and tarnished the stock can (which forced me to get a slip-on ;)  If I recall correct, pull your plugs...the #2 and #3 will be fouled, while #1 and #4 will look fine.  It was a $60 part and easy to do (and I am No mechanic).  good luck

I did replace mine.  To diagnose, take out the tube that goes to the intake port.  If you see fuel on that side of the FPR or the tube, then it needs to be replaced.  Fuel must only come out the other side to the fuel tank.  Easy to replace, just get the FRP and gasket.  BTW, need some rags underneath just in case fuel spits out.

Re: F4i fuel pressure regulator..... Has anyone had issues with it?

I had problems with  the bike starting last week.  The bike started breaking up anywhere before 5 grand, and after that it was fine.  It would still pull the front tire, but when you came to a stop, the bike would lope, and then die.  It would start right back up again.....

So I took the bike apart, checked fuel flow from the return line off the regulator.   The manual states that you should have 6.4 oz(can), or 6.6 oz (us) in 10 sec.  I only had 3 oz.  I did try another spare regulator, and it only gave me around 2.5.  I did take the fuel pump assy out of the tank, cleaned it, checked all the wires for contenuity(sp?) nothing out of the ordinary....The fuel filter  seemed great, although I have no way of checking this unless I do the fuel pump pressure check....And I don't have the proper fuel pressure gauge that screws into the tank where the banjo bolt holds the main line onto the housing. of the fuel pump.

What's really wierd is that if I suck on the Vaccum hose off the regulator, It will allow more fuel to flow, but I can taste fuel fumes from that vaccum line.  It's not actually a liquid, just strong fumes......Long story short, I have now been able to get 5.5 oz from the return line.....Not sure what I did......LOL, maybe there was shite in front of the sock, that filters the fuel before it enters the main fuel filter.....other than that.....I've got nothing( for answers)..It's just bugging me, only because I have no real cause for the low fuel volume.......

Honda parts are extremely expensive here in Canada......Fuel filter is $42 us, and it's $85 Can....(I'm pretty sure that the Can/us dollar is close in value......)  I did take the bike out on Sunday, and it was fine.....That's what scares me........

I have 02 with 1200 miles.  Same problem.  Is it a possible bike defect?  Have you had any problems since you replaced the regulator?

Re: F4i fuel pressure regulator..... Has anyone had issues with it?

I don't think it is a defect. It seems to happen with bikes that are several years old with very low miles.  my guess is that the rubber inside gets dried out/rotted and then blows out when the bike is ridden. I have ridden over 5k miles since I replaced it and have not had a problem since.

Re: F4i fuel pressure regulator..... Has anyone had issues with it?

I was referred to this thread because I am having a problem, I actually have fuel running out of my exhaust and my two middle cylinders are not firing at all.  So my question is this, if the FPR is bad, (im trying to think logically here before i go spending money on all sorts of parts i may not need) wouldn't it affect all 4 cylinders?  Why only the two middle ones???

Re: F4i fuel pressure regulator..... Has anyone had issues with it?

First off, I want to state that I am NO mechanic, basic maintenance and other small tasks is all I'm willing to even attempt.  I cannot tell you for certain that the FPR is you're problem, but the symptoms sound just like the ones I had.

If I recall correctly (i did this over a year ago) the FPR has 2 tubes that feed off of it directly to the #2 & 3 cylinders; which would explain the fouled plugs in only the middle 2 cylinders and not the 1 & 4.

I called the dealer and they wanted $100+ just to do a leak-down test to find the problem... I figured I'd try changing out the FPR because logically it seemed to be the problem. Also, the FPR is only a $50 part, so if I was wrong it would still be considerably cheaper than the leak-down test alone.

Again, you're symptoms sound identical to the ones I had, but it may not be the same problem.  hope this provided at least a little help, good luck!

Re: F4i fuel pressure regulator..... Has anyone had issues with it?

You're right!....LOL.  I was thinking about this for the last couple of days, and I did know it was a fuel problem, but I couldn't understand how it was just the two cyls, (if the fuel pressure was overpowering the injector).  There's no way the injector would dump that much fuel doun the cyl just by the plugs not firing under normal conditions.  That's way too much fuel.  Yes heat does turn the fuel into a vapour, but that's not how you want you're bike atomizing the fuel.  This is why Honda went with a 12 hole injector with the 03-up RR, instead of the 4 hole we have with the F4i.

The problem with the regulator is that it works different than most people think(including me at one point in time).  As engine load increases, the regulator does not increase fuel pressure, it just equals out the  fuel pressure, or keeps it at a constant pressure.  When the engine needs more fuel, the injector on time increases.  So when the regulator goes, it will allow whatever the pressure is from the pump to pass through the regulator into the vaccum hose into those 2 cyls.   Try the test I suggested before and let us know.

Re: F4i fuel pressure regulator..... Has anyone had issues with it?

Hey Red....u know where I can order that FPR from for that price?  I looked around a lil bit today and found some schematic diagrams of the parts but i saw it for like $65....let me know, its worth a shot for me at this point, i'll chalk the money up as part of maintenance.  I'll just have to Ebay more next month. haha

ohhhh BTW....does the new FPR come with that seal/o-ring or do i need to get that seperately?

Haha, Thanks!  its a nice change of pace; I'm used to causing problems rather than solving them.

Re: F4i fuel pressure regulator..... Has anyone had issues with it?

I order my parts through ridenow.com because they seem to have good prices and the warehouse is next door to my work (don't have to pay for shipping :)

    http://partsfinder.ridenow.com/

    20 REGULATOR, PRESSURE
    16740-MBW-J32  (replaces 16740-MBW-J31)
    001 $49.14

That is for the F4i, if you have a diff model it may be more.   I am fairly certain it does come with the o-ring.

awesome! Thanks for the link, I will add it to favorites for next time.  I ended up ordering off of ronayers.com, it was $52 so not too bad.  And the o-ring is seperate for like $1.60 more

I just hope after i get the part my bike runs like it did before.............i cant wait to start riding it again.
