    getting money from my ex

i was recently dating a guy, but he liked to use my money for drugs, being he was a dealer that i recently found out.  Anyways we had gone out drinking and i don;t remember much but 1300 was taken out of my room where i keep my cash...i know he took it. However i am very afraid of him hurting me or my roommate, or potentially ruining my career.  What should i do, the money is not the issue its more i dont want him to keep selling drugs in my area and i don't want him to come after me

    Thanks,

Re: getting money from my ex

First, what has this got to do with motorcycles?  This is a community revolving around motorcycles.  It is one thing if an established member comes to this section and asks a completely unrelated question.  It is quite another for someone to blithely stroll in and take advantage of something we're proud of here.

Second, regarding the money, is it an issue or isn't it?  You contradict yourself in the thread's title and in the body of your message.

Third, assuming the money isn't an issue, since that's what you last typed, then why would your ex come after you?  You've already "contributed" to him.

Fourth, do you always leave such large sums of money in your room?  If so, I'd strongly suggest opening a bank account.  Anyone with a Social Security Number and $5.00 can do it.  Protect yourself by taking what should be common sense precautions.

Fifth, why the hell are you asking this on an internet message board?  This type of situation would be better suited for your local police and/or an attorney.

Re: getting money from my ex

Fisrtly, I really don't think that this is some girl wandering onto the site, there are way too many threads started by a female with a post count of one having problems with a dickhead ex to be a coincidence.  I think it's the same girl just making up new screen names for every question, you really don't need to do that, next time just pm me or something if you don't want people to know your business

Socal is harsh, but he is 100% right on the keeping money at home thing, it's retarted.  No excuse for that, get a bank account and start using checks or debit cards, I don't think you would find even 50$ in my room if you searched every inch of it.

Next up, while he probably did take it, no one saw him take it and it's not on camera so you will never be able to prove it.  If you are more worried about him than go to the local court or police station and ask what you need in order to qualify for an order of protection, if you can get one of those than he will not be able to step within a certain distance of you or face arrest.  Finally if you know he is selling drugs on the corner then why don't you call 911 and report a drug dealer on that corner fitting his description.

What is being taken advantage of?  I am an officer and have no problem fielding questions such as these.  While I agree that generally this section shouldn't turn into a general law forum (this IS a mc site), I don't think it hurts to help a member with something a little out of that scope.  It shouldn't be okay for an "established member" if it's not okay for a new one.  What does the description of this section say?  It says, "Ever want to ask a cop a question?"  It doesn't specify motorcycle Q's only.  Are you even a police officer?  If not, why are you even posting in this section?  I'm assuming you're not an officer because all you seem to be trying to do is make her feel stupid.  You're right, if she is really concerned about it she should call the local police, but it still doesn't hurt for her to ask.

So angel child, how do you know he took it?  Are you just assuming so?  I know there are times where we just "know" someone did something, but if you are going to try and get this guy charged with the theft you'll need proof.  Either you witnessed him take it, he told you (and will admit it to the cops-unlikely), or someone else saw him.  Bottom line is you have to be willing to prosecute (go forward with the theft case) in order for him to be criminally charged.  Depending on the timeframe the police may or may not try collecting latent fingerprints.  Only problem is, if he ever had authorized access to whatever you kept your money in his fingerprints could be there lawfully.  If you do not want to charge him criminally (possibly sending him to jail/prison), you can take him to civil court (sue him) for the money.  However, you're still going to have to face him in order to do that.  If you don't want to take either of those options out of fear just keep your distance from the guy and never give him any money.  If you ever feel in danger, don't hesitate to call the local police.

It also says, "Topics can range from fighting a ticket to becoming a law enforcement officer."  In my opinion, this particular post, and the recent rash of similar posts, fall outside this range.  What I'm trying to prevent is every Tom, Richard, and Harrietta coming here and creating an account for the sole purpose of looking for cheap legal advice.  It would, again in my opinion, greatly lessen the value this section provides to legitimate members.

Also, I heartily disagree with you that "established members" shouldn't have greater leeway with the scope of their questions.  They've contributed back to the community in some form, and as such, have earned rights and privileges, albeit unwritten, that newcomers haven't ... yet.  I would even go so far as to suggest that we prevent posts in this section from members with fewer than some number of other posts, similar to what other sites do regarding their For Sale sections.  Without giving back, people who only "take", if allowed to run rampant, will eventually destroy the community spirit.

No, I'm not a police officer.  I am, however, a moderator on this board, and as such, when I feel that a "policy" (and I quote that word because we have very few hard and fast policies) is "violated" (quoted for same reason), I have the onus of speaking up.  And I don't think this kind of inquiry belongs on this board.

With that said, after re-reading my post, I am big enough to admit that I was probably too harsh given the situation.  However, and this is not an attempt to rationalize, but simply a glimpse into my thought process at the time, like PoPo, I too had the thought that this might be someone who has posted here before.  I then thought that it might be some kind of weird troll.  And if not a troll, then a person in dire need of a virtual slap in the face to wake up and smell the coffee.  My post was in response to both of these possibilities.

With all of that said, Angel, if I offended, I apologize.  I wish you the best in working out your problem.

Now, if, as we suspect, you've posted here before, and the situations you've described are real, I still think you need to wise up a bit and stop putting yourself in bad situations.  Don't date drug dealers.  If you find out he's a drug dealer after you start dating him, stop dating him.  Don't drink to the point of partial amnesia.  Don't leave large sums of cash laying around.  Regarding previous posts that I suspect came from you: don't believe everything you hear.  If it sounds fishy, it probably is.  Don't let your ex-boyfriends have access to compromising pictures of your children.  Perhaps don't even let him have visiting rights and/or custody.

P.S.  On a much lighter note, I had to edit this post because the stupid obscenity filter starred out the usual name that falls between "Tom" and "Harry".  Wink
