I just realized this could be dangerous

have you ever been in a car with one of those ppl that drive fast until they are pretty close to the red light and then they brake (i know that's about everybody who drives cars)...

Well I just realized today was I was riding that the way we brake is very dangerous because we have to start our braking process way before we even come close to that stop sign or red light, and we are gradually stopping because of the whole downshifting and can't just hit the brakes when we are close.

so imagine you have one of those maniacs driving fast and doesn't realize that you're already braking and just rear ends you. that's just freaking scary!!!! I mean, they already "can't see us" even if we're right in front of them wearing the loudest color out there.

what are your thoughts on this and how can we be safer as riders?

not true.  You can easily brake late and have plenty of time to downshift.

one thing that *may* help is to get a tail lamp modulator.  These will give the drivers behind you more warning that you are braking.

Abad's correct but as an alternative; if you have time to see someone closing in on you fast as you come to a stop, you don't necessarily have to downshift .. you can just pull in the clutch and brake. It won't harm your bike. Of course the other method is better but around here in crazy ATL traffic with teens zooming 70 mph on my tail as I slow, I've had many instances for years and years where I've just held clutch in and braked for a quicker stop with no problem.

i directly split the lanes whether i'm hard braking (not too hard like track) or easing it in on the streets. so i usually don't worry about being rear-ended. even if i'll be the only one in the front of the light, i never take the full middle lane and lean towards the middle (as if inviting the car to share the lane w/ me).

p.s. you don't always have to downshift to each gear coming into a stop. there's pros and cons to that of course, but i think needing to be in a lower gear just ready to accelerate are more rare/occasional cases instead of coming to a full stop and clutching it in.

I really don't worry about it, the bike will stop way faster than any car.  Like abad said you don't have to start braking way before you get the light, u can wait till the last minute and stop on a dime.

I don't know what takes so long to downshift either, i can downshift from 5th to 1st in just a couple seconds.

    Brake? What's that? Hahahaha!

Seriously, when I ride I don't like to be close to cages so I'm usually far out ahead of them. If I'm not, it usually means traffic is pretty bad and no one is going fast anyway. In certain situations, I like to use cages for visibility. I'll ride close, but not too close (not crowding the cage)... kind of like a pilot fish following a shark around. Don't know if that makes sense or not... must... have... more... coffee...
